Feeder Canal Art Residency

Feeder Canal Art Residency Research project at Silverthorne Lane for permanent artwork in a public urban nature reserve

The Feeder Canal Residency is a research project at Silverthorne Lane. It consists of a range of activities that investigate the wildlife, ecology, and history of Bristol’s Feeder Canal. The
residency has been created to influence the designs for a permanent artwork in a public urban nature reserve that is being created as part of Silverthorne Lane’s redevelopment. Artists Rachael Champion and Jon

athan Trayte are working with Gingko Projects and a series of Bristol based collaborators to realise this residency throughout the Summer and Autumn of 2023. There will be opportunities for the public to get involved and learn about Bristol’s Feeder Canal in the coming weeks and months.

The “More Than Human” sculpture workshop with Art & Design Foundation students was a whirlwind. We managed to complete five sculptures over the five days and install them in two locations nearby to Silverthorne Lane. Pictured here are a few of the finished pieces in situ and some in progress shots throughout the week.

Hopefully the sculptures will become habitats for some of the wildlife around Silverthorne Lane.

The students were fantastic to work with. They brought so much energy and creativity into some very unfamiliar territory.

A special thanks to Rank Engineering and St. Philips Marsh Nursery for providing places for these artworks to live for the next year.

We will be exploring the fascinating ecosystem of the canal and discussing predictions as to how the canal will adapt to the changes taking place around it.

Fred is a network ecologist interested in how ecosystems respond to changes brought about by both humans and nature. His work focuses on the interactions between different elements within the ecosystem from pollination through to predation.
