QIANDAO LAKE - THOUSAND ISLANDS, HANGZHAO, CHINA 2003

"Qiandao Lake, Thousand Islands, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China is a Heritage Site National Park and I was there making a short documentary for my client the Tourist Board.
In 1959 the Xi'nan river dam construction flooded the vast Chun'an county valley, tragically submerging the ancient city of Shi Cheng (AD 25–200) and creating 1,078 islands – the peaks of the flooded mountains. Some of these islands have taken on their own personalities for tourism. Bird Island, Monkey Island, Peacock Island, Snake Island - to name a few and the tourists are ‘bused’ to them by lightning fast 10-seater speedboats.
These were our daily transport during filming, and I remember heading out at 3:30am to shoot a sunrise that emerged between two mountain peaks. A phenomenon that apparently happened very rarely and that the client had insisted on.
In the pitch-black of night, at 100 mph, with no search light, our driver showed off his navigational skills - weaving and speeding past the silhouettes of huge sunken trees and partially submerged islands for over an hour. We reached the island location for the shooting position, moored off and waded ashore just before dawn. My hands cramped rigid from gripping the sides of the boat in fear. We got the shot but it was an experience that still makes me shudder when I recall it.
I found this image from my pre-production stills. There was a powdery pastel light that settled over the lakes in the late afternoon at that time of the year and this one photograph captured it beautifully".
