My favourite songs don’t belong to one genre.
One minute it’s Nick Drake. The next it’s Little Mix. Then suddenly I’m listening to Elgar like it’s completely normal to swap between folk guitar, pop vocals, and orchestral strings in the space of a day.
And I used to think I needed to pick a side when it came to music. Like I should be “a brit pop person” or “an R&B girl” or “a classical nerd”.
But I don’t feel that at all anymore.
Because I don’t really listen for labels. I listen for how it’s made.
I love the way harmonies sit together, how voices or instruments can support each other, clash slightly, then resolve. I love the way a bass line can quietly change the whole feeling of a song. I love how a melody can feel simple on the surface but be doing something really clever underneath.
Whether it’s a stripped back acoustic track, a big pop chorus, or a full orchestral piece, I keep hearing the same thing: people making sound fit together in interesting ways.
That’s what pulls me in.
So I don’t really feel the need to declare a “type” of music I like.
My musical taste won't fit in a box, it’s more like a listening habit. I’m always noticing the layers, the choices, the way everything connects... and genuinely always trying to work out if I could sing it with Songbirds or simplify it for Show Up & Sing! (It's a blessing and a curse!)
Good music is good music, whether it’s Nick Drake, Little Mix, or Elgar.
Different sounds.
Same appreciation.
