"The dance is hypnotic, a measured, unhurried, repeating phrase. A visitor asks about it and Harrington replies with a meditative description of each of its parts, musing on the evocations and influences they touch upon and the feelings and functions brought to mind by them. The repetition and tempo, she says, is not particularly exciting, not in and of itself a ‘good’ dance nor is it meant to be. It facilitates the real focus of the piece, which is on the collaborative, free-flowing conversation.'

Caitlin Russell shares her reflectins of ‘Satelliser a dance for the gallery’ by .neve.harrington and co-workers at back in July. Thank you for sharing your review of the final CONTNIUOUS presentation!

Last week we reflected on ‘Spirit Compass- Where there is Movement there is Change’ by Lucy Suggate - one of the inaugural Commissions and our first tour in 2019.

‘Spirit Compass’ toured to , , , and where together dance artists worked through 'tidal meditations,’ a practice of deep listening and moving informed by a detailed score focused on the pelvis.

Beginning on the ‘shoreline’, performers ‘cast off’ into a performance space lit with changing sunset colours. Propelled by Tom Page’s absorbing live drumming, they move through a process of internal and external detection and connection to energy.

Lucy is currently working with collaborator Charlie Ford on TENDER STONES. This interdisciplinary performance brings Charlie’s drawing, image and object making practices into orbit with Lucy’s dance research. During the performance they construct paper stones to access the imagination and play with illusions of time, weight and tenderness.

Thank you Lucy for sharing with us how you continue to move the needle in dance, installation, and interdisciplinary imaginaries.

TENDER STONES will be performed at Pembroke Open Doors Festival, part of Open Cambridge 2023
Pembroke College Auditorium
Saturday 16th September 3pm & 6:30pm

We begin our season of reflection with the first CONTINUOUS Commission, ‘Spirit Compass: Where there is movement there is change’ by Lucy Suggate.

“Spirit Compass- Where there is Movement there is Change was attempting to create a space that gathered multiple perspectives into states of absorption and detection as opposed to scrutiny and traditional forms of concentration. It was deeply satisfying to glance around as see bodies reclined and in some sort of slumber or tending to other modes of being, it makes me think of the conditions required to watch/witness/be with abstract dance work and how the installation and gallery space can support this type of dance work.” Lucy Suggate, 2023

Commissioned by and , Spirit Compass was a site for communal listening and embodiment – an island or a temple of sorts. Audiences in 2019 and early 2020 at , , , and were invited to relax and witness the movement while sitting or lying on a ‘shoreline’ of cushions resembling smooth stones.

Suggate worked with an exceptional group of dance artists: Annie Hanauer, Alexandrina Hemsley, Alexah Tomey-Alleyne, Claricia Parinussa, Fernanda Muñoz-Newsome, Isabella Oberländer, SERAFINE1369, Stephanie McMann, and Rowdy SS; musician Tom Page and jewellery designer Lydia Hartshorn.

After 4 years of touring dance to gallery spaces, CONTINUOUS hosted its final live performance at the end of last month.

The project has encompassed 3 new commissions, 4 tours of existing works, films, screenings, podcasts, workshops, websites, and online events. We’ve reached over 10,000 audience members and have worked with well over 100 artists across the nation and beyond.

Over the next 8 weeks we will be:

celebrating the performances in a series of posts
reflecting on the experience in a final CONTINUOUS Collaborations online chat
and evaluating the experience of this project for the artists, organisation and spaces involved.

It’s been a pleasure, a challenge, and a rewarding journey for the CONTINUOUS Team past and present. For the artists, many of the works were years in the making; each a joyous feat, with vibrant legacies and futures ahead of them.

Over this season of reflection, we’d love to hear your memories of these performances and events! Stay tuned for more!

"Our bodies built more heat together as Fernanda Muñoz-Newsome began initiating our participation. Falling in step, we pulled our hands along our arms one by one, slowly over our shoulders and our faces, and down to our stomachs, breathing intentionally."

🪡 We are delighted to share that Satelliser: a dance for the gallery by .neve.harrington and co-workers will be at 29th-30th July as part of the exhibition Threads!

These are the final live performances as part of the programme, a partnership between & , taking dance into gallery spaces across the UK.

Satelliser: a dance for the gallery is a durational performance you can drop in and out of - a space of speaking, listening, moving, embroidering and resting. As coworkers subtly alter their spatial configurations in response to the visitors’ movements, they play with the orientation relationships between performance, visitor and space and the kinds of conversations these can support.
