Our first Look & Learn photography workshops took place last month, and we’re so excited to share some of our work with the world!

UWE Bristol Photography volunteers and locals from St. Anne’s met together for a shared love of photography and exploration. We briefly introduced the technical side of photography before venturing out into St. Anne’s Woods with analogue and digital cameras.

Laura Foster led a fantastic cyanotype workshop, using flora and fauna collected during the photowalk.

Lee Elkins helped us edit and sequence the work, which will eventually become a printed zine and exhibition.

It was wonderful to meet new people, share skills and watch others enjoy making pictures!

Introducing the Look & Learn team! Lee will be running the editing, sequencing and zinemaking session on 29th June at St. Anne’s House.

Lee Elkins is the founder and Creative Director of . Established in 2018, Lost Light Recordings is an independent publisher that works with photographers to realise projects through the medium of the photobook. The books he has created under the imprint since 2018, including Cian Oba-Smith’s Andover & Six Acres, Sadie Catt’s Woodstock and the forthcoming Harrowdown Hill by John Spinks, explore the political landscape and its effect on people and place.

Passionate about creating authentic expressions of photographers’ work, Elkins collaborates creatively with both established photographic artists and new talent to create distinctive photobooks. Elkins manages the whole process of creating a book with intense detail: from the editing down and sequencing of photographs with the artist, the graphic design, materiality, personally overseeing the printing, to hand binding the books. This attention to detail calls on Elkins conviction that a photobook is more than a book of photographs, which in the right hands can become a complex intellectual dialogue between photographer and reader and his experience as a master bookbinder in the printing industry. Elkins worked as a bookbinder for twenty years in Frome, Somerset, for one of the UK’s most significant printers before gaining a first class BA (Hons) in Photography from the University of the West of England and an MA in Photography and the Book from Plymouth University.

Introducing the Look & Learn team! Alesha is the UWE Bristol lead for this project, currently in her final year of the BA Photography course.

is a Bristol based fashion and documentary photographer, who embraces the playful and experimental nature of this medium. Her work is rooted within an editorial practice, yet still utilising tools such as location and styling in order to embed narrative and storytelling within her photography. Collaborating with other artists, designers, stylists, hair and make–up artists, as well as photographers and filmmakers, has become a vital part of both her practice and process. Just last year, Alesha was invited to photograph at both New York and Paris Fashion Week which enriched her knowledge and love for fashion photography even further.

Most recently, Alesha has created a body of work re-visiting a favourite childhood novel; The Famous five, by Enid Blyton. By capturing modern clothing within the fashion idiom and a range of diverse, re-imagined characters, Alesha aims to challenge social issues identified within the original series of books, such as racism, homophobia, and sexism. This project titled ‘The Promise of Happiness’ has been made into a magazine and an accompanying short film.

Introducing the Look & Learn team! Josh is the founder of Look & Learn who will be helping run the photography workshops alongside UWE Bristol Photography volunteers.

(b.1995) is a British artist and photographer whose work often centres around stories of misrepresented places and the people who live there. From ageing Irish populations in British towns and cities to the expatriate communities of Oman, Josh hopes to facilitate conversations about identity, home and interculturalism through his work. In his most recent ongoing series (Sometimes A Silence Will Cut Through Sounds), Josh explores the therapeutic applications of photography in response to his Grandfather passing away and a family history of mental health problems. He completed a BA (First Class Hons) in Photography in 2018 and graduated with an MA in Photography at UWE Bristol in 2020.
