A Brighton pop up cinema community. Much of today's film culture is centred around mass release hype movies like The Avengers, or 50 Shades of Grey.

It is our mission to screen a variety of alternative, fun, interesting, unusual, cult, and all time classic films in intimate locations around Brighton. We want to bring an alternative option where people can enjoy cinema that won't grace the screens of your local multiplex. We want to provide a place not only for new exciting cinema, but lost & undiscovered gems of the past, alongside cult favour

ites & definitive cinematic classics that whilst widely known about, still seem to remain unseen by the vast majority of the people we speak to and are rarely seen on a big screen. All of this in a fun informal friendly "pop up" environment where discussion and a deeper understanding of these movies can occur pre and post screenings.

Meet Terry Funk who features in our Sept 17th doc screening. Terry is one of the most affable and kind humans you could ever wish to meet, but also one of the wildest and most unhinged professional wrestlers of all time.

As Hollywood screenwriter and director of our Sept 17th film Beyond The Mat, Barry Blaustein puts it "A lot of guys acted crazy, but Terry made you believe it might be true."

No stranger to Holloywood himself Funk appeared in numerous films, including Patrick Swayze's Roadhouse, and repeatedly worked on films with his friend Sylvester Stallone. Hell, he even starred in an episode of Quantum Leap.

But to wrestling fans, Terry was always the wildcard of the Funk family wrestling dynasty. Residing in 'The Double Cross Ranch' in Amarillo Texas, Funk was a multiple time world champion who was just as happy tending to his horses on the ranch as he was attacking his opponents with a flaming branding iron (no really) in the ring.

A true character the late Funk was a (barely) walking contradiction and is a fascinating subject for our Sept 17th doc screening about the bizarre world of pro-wrestling, that will be preceded by an equally fascinating chat with author Dan Higgins discussing his new book Lords Of The Ring which delves into how our social, political and cultural landscape intersects with the wild and often misunderstood art form of professional wrestling.

Bergman's first work with his future frequent collaborator Harriet Andersson, (she and the director would embark on an affair during production... and it shows) the film features a spectacular and now-iconic performance from Andersson as Monika, embodying an earthy sensuality, a knowing sexuality and a devilish impetuousness.

Despite its apparent simplicity (the film is certainly among the most accessible of Bergman's works), it displays remarkable maturity for the then 34-year-old director, forming a bridge between his early films and the internationally renowned masterpieces that followed, including The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Persona and F***y and Alexander.

A week Sunday under the stars in our garden (Sun Aug 23rd) we are getting the gang back together for a special outdoor screening of the iconic 1986 film (celebrating it's 40th anniversary this year) Rob Reiner's Stand By Me.

Featuring a remarkable young cast, including Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation), River Phoenix (My Own Private Idaho), Corey Feldman (Gremlins, The Goonies), Jerry O'Connell (Jerry Maguire) and Kiefer Sutherland (The Lost Boys), Stand By Me, named after the iconic Ben E. King song, is a masterclass in understated, truthful storytelling.

Warm, nostalgic, and quietly profound, it remains as emotionally resonant today as it was four decades ago.

THURSDAY SEP. 17TH - Created by Ron Howard's Imagine production company, this honest, intimate, revealing, highly entertaining and critically acclaimed behind-the-scenes look at the bizarre world of professional wrestling will thrill, intrigue and reward fans and non-fans alike, revealing the human face of the long misunderstood performance art that is professional wrestling.

Director Barry Blaustein, screenwriter of Hollywood hits such as Coming to America and The Nutty Professor (and a secret lifelong wrestling fan), chronicles the lives of wrestlers from every corner of the industry. From stars at the height of their careers, such as Mick Foley and the soon-to-be Hollywood megastar Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, to legends on their last legs (quite literally), like Terry Funk, and those still hanging on to the bottom rung such as Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Beyond the Mat captures wrestling at every level.

Blaustein uncovers a complex world populated by undeniably colourful characters who are unexpectedly tender, passionate and intelligent, as well as all too willing to batter their own bodies (and those of their friends) into total oblivion in pursuit of immortality in the ring.

🐦‍⬛ANNOUNCEMENT 🐦‍⬛ Boasting a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, on Wednesday, September 2nd, we screen perhaps the first truly great film of Ingmar Bergman's long and storied career - Summer With Monika.

Bergman would, of course, go on to create a body of work that ranks him among the greatest directors of all time, alongside Kubrick, Hitchcock, and Kurosawa. But Summer with Monika marks the director's first major turning point, both on and off screen.

It tells the story of two young working-class Swedes who, disillusioned with everyday life, steal a boat and embark on an impulsive getaway, spending an idyllic summer together on a small island. There, they experience the first bloom of love and lust before reality comes crashing back into their lives with the arrival of autumn.

The boys are getting ready to grace our big screen on August 26th, as part of our rescheduled event with BBC Broadcaster, journalist, and Beatles afficionado Samira Ahmed (host of the BBC's flagship cultural show Front Row).

We will be interviewing her on her new book about the The Beatles big screen debut ' A Hard Day's Night' and then showing a 4K restoration of this British classic credited with the invention of the music video and still listed as one the 100 best films of all time by Time Magazine (& others).
