NY old timer Simon Pentleton has his new book Living The Dream out. Simon explored the territory many of is ex-pats were wary of, in the basements and tenements way out east, away from the proximity if Broadway and Lafayette. What Simon really captures in his pictures is how tough it all was. Glamour now covers those times in a glossy veneer, but the is that it was exhausting. Thankfully Simon made it back to shore. Today we open John Giorno: Seven Dial-A Poems at Satellite Storefront in Brighton/Hove. During my tenure working on the Bowery in NY’s Lower East Side, I got to know John. I can’t remember exactly how that came about but it may have been a request to Nan for something. In those years there were still members of the Warhol crowd knocking about and I’d met a number of them. Taylor Mead was a friend. But John was also a wonderful soul, a seeker of infinite truths, following the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Once in a while I’d wander down the Bowery from 334 to 222 (Rothko’s studio had been on the ground floor) and have tea with John. William Burrough’s Bunker was still listed on the doorbell. He was very gracious. I remember once taking joey gabriel along for the ride as I knew they’d hit it off. Burroughs’ bedroom was kept immaculate, and John’s fireplace was chalked with Ta***ic symbols from previous rituals.

So it’s good to sit and hear his voice. Even though that world seems so far away, it’s as close as closing the eyes and letting the mind travel.

John Marchant Gallery and Satellite Storefront are very pleased to present John Giorno: Seven Dial-A-Poems, with the kind cooperation of Giorno Poetry Systems in NY. Opens 6-9pm Thursday to Saturday 27th August to 19th September.

After earning a BA from Columbia University in 1958, John Giorno (1936-2019) established himself as an active presence in New York’s art scene, lauded for his starring role in Andy Warhol’s five-hour film Sleep (1963). A life-long collaborator, he staged multimedia events with Robert Rauschenberg, developed new recording techniques with Bob Moog, and performed alongside William Burroughs and Brion Gysin. In 1967, he published his first monograph, Poems, and his first LP, collaborating with Rauschenberg and Les Levine on the artwork and designs for both.

Giorno created Dial-A-Poem at The Architectural League of New York in 1969, which was subsequently included in the landmark group exhibition Information at the Museum of Modern Art in 1970. Dial-A-Poem was both celebrated and censored for its selection of readings and speeches by poets and activists.

Giorno was not just a poet but an artist and a performer. In 1969, recognising that the written word could be powerfully transformed into spoken word, he began a performance practice that he pursued throughout his life, pioneering a distinct and unique style. In 1981, he formed The John Giorno Band and performed at various punk rock venues.

Giorno retired from performing in 2017 and spent the last two years of his life in meditation, artmaking, writing poetry, and working on his memoir, Great Demon Kings. Today marks the third anniversary of Jamie Reid’s passing. He’s always on my mind as there’s so much to be done with his extensive archive (the exhibition Believe In The Ruins continues at the Netherlands Design Museum in Den Bosch) but obviously today’s the day to gaze towards the stars. I’ve chosen this image to mark his passing because it always make me laugh. That’s Jamie’s foot in that Seditionaries boot, published here in an advert in International Times, June 1977. Just yesterday we visited William Blake’s cottage in Felpham, Sussex (someone whom Jamie very much admired), and it was splendid to see his plaque list him as artist, poet and mystic. Jamie’s key objective, in my mind, was to encourage people to reach for their potential in whatever field they chose, so it’s fitting that in astrological terms, August 8th, the Lions Gate Portal, is all about that very objective. ‘Anarchy Is The Key. Our new project space SATELLITE Storefront opens tomorrow here in Brighton, with a selection of films by the renowned US performance artist and environmental activist Betsy Damon (b. 1940). It’s a great honour to work with Betsy on this inaugural presentation, which will be open in the summer evenings 6-9pm Thurs-Sat at 22 St John’s Rd, BN32FB. Betsy Damon is an internationally-recognised artist whose public work and living systems, such as the Living Water Garden, have received widespread acclaim. She directs Keepers of the Waters, a non-profit focused on ecological planning, advocacy and education. She advocates for Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) as a more effective, resilient, and economical alternatives to conventional infrastructure projects that try to impose human control over natural systems. NBS embraces nature’s self-sustaining tendencies by harnessing natural processes to address environmentsl challenges. Damon has recently been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Damon has lectured widely in the U.S., Europe and China. She’s been a visiting artist at countless colleges and universities. Documentation of her work in China has been archived at the Asia Art Archive, while the Annenberg Foundation and Metabolic Studios are focused on digitising Damon’s expansive art practice. We are delighted to announce the launch of a new gallery-affiliated project space called SATELLITE Storefront. Our inaugural presentation will be Body Of Water (1976-2026) a series of films by renowned US performance artist and activist Betsy Damon (b. 1940). We are thrilled that Betsy has helped us select the works for this presentation, including documentation of her seminal performance Blind Beggarwoman (1976), and a pivotal 1986 documentary filmed in Chengdu, China. This work, Keepers Of The Waters (1996) marked a significant moment in the evolution of her practice towards water guardianship. We also present a brand new short film shot recently at Squam Lake, New Hampshire which exquisitely captures the breathtaking beauty of the waters, encouraging us to shift towards a more caring paradigm. We are delighted to announce the launch of a new gallery-affiliated online venture and project space. Founded by Alison McKenna and John Marchant, SATELLITE COLLECTIVE is a platform dedicated to works on paper by artists we already work with, alongside new artists whose practices we are excited to introduce. We are excited to see the project grow and evolve over time.

There is something uniquely immediate and intimate about an artist’s works on paper. Whether drawing, collage or painting, these pieces often capture the energy of experimentation, discovery and creative process in a way that is both compelling and deeply personal. SATELLITE COLLECTIVE celebrates these works and makes them available to both new and established collectors at an accessible price point. Alongside original works, we will also offer selected editioned works where appropriate.

SATELLITE COLLECTIVE reflects our commitment to developing thoughtful, artist-centred ways of working that benefit everyone involved, and we are delighted to share this new chapter with you.

Jamie Reid: Believe In The Ruins opens today at the Design Museum Den Bosch in the Netherlands. This show looks so great, not least because we worked with designer Jan Konings, who had the genius idea of using the previous exhibition’s leftover plinths and display materials, giving everything a brilliantly subtle awkwardness you don’t expect in a museum. There are ‘random’ holes, mismatched panels and construction notes… Jamie would have loved it. There’s also nothing in frames. It runs until November 15th, and Den Bosch is very easy to get to from Amsterdam. Do go if you can. Design Museum Den Bosch
