Music that Inspires me in the studio: Sebastian Tellier ‘La Ritournelle’ from 2003.

A whopper of a track that doesn’t mind giving you all the feels. A loping piano line, heavenly strings, Tony Allen on drums putting in a masterclass in lighthandedness, this track moves from heart strings pulling, to flying high above the clouds to placing you ever so gently back on the ground and kissing you on the forehead.
Arranged well, recorded well, probably only a light hand on the mix and master, it’s all there and you can feel it.
Essential.

Music that inspires my work@as a producer/engineer.

Nick Drake ‘Five Leaves Left’

Every generation ‘discovers’ Nick Drake and rightly so, beautiful songs, lovingly crafted.

This debut album is a work of art, bringing a life to Nicks songs that lifted them above singer/songwriter and have given them a longevity and beauty that maybe may have been missed if not.

Nick trusted his producer Joe Boyd and that is the lesson here, Joe could hear that these tracks deserved to reach more people than maybe Nick could, and went about making them undeniably reach into people’s consciousness and stay there, as they have with me and countless others.

Make your art as undeniable as this, and you’ll be OK.

I don’t often post about gear, it’s not the gear that makes the engineer, knowing what tools to use and when to bring out the emotions is what makes a good engineer.
However, I took a moment to listen to the wet signal coming through my Doctor A reverb/delay this morning and it gives me goose pimples.
These things sound amazing and deliver the tone I’m looking for to build emotional in a track.
I’ve had this for ages and use it, even in really small amounts, on everything because it has that tone, is really flexible and has depth deeper than Loch Ness.

Don’t forget that it music is all about emotion, that’s all I care about.

Bloody love this guy, and he’s coming back to Brighton!
I was lucky enough to have helped on his last record, which is insanely good, and live is some transcendental s**t. You don’t want to miss this, at a great venue

Music that inspires my work as a producer and mixing engineer. #1 Nils Frahm.

Clearly a virtuoso piano player, a love of analogue gear and the skills to herd cats keeping it all together.

Nils’ aesthetic and the worlds he creates are so beautiful, slowly shifting, taking time to be present and to feel each emotion.

It’s finding the emotion and bringing it out is what I love and what I focus on when producing and mixing your tracks, whether that’s a key moment on an album, or a note in a single song.

It’s all about emotion to connect you with your audience, so they can feel what you feel.

If you are a producer or engineer and you haven’t tuned into Happy Fun Time Hour you are missing out on the best podcast.

I’ve binged all 200+ episodes a few years back and stoked they have come back from a 4 year hiatus with new episodes.

Good good s**t and there is gold tucked away inside their sometimes inane chat.
