Lewes STEM Festival the other weekend with my Giant Pantograph body miniaturising machine. This was its first outing since Maker Faire Lille last month, and I really leaned into using colour felt-tip pens, rather than the grey graphite mechanical pencils I’ve used since I built the first version in 2011. The big advantages are that lines are bolder and colours can be swapped out easily between body outlines. This made for some fun colour choices and combinations – siblings in duotone, a football fan in his blue and white team colours (Brighton Seagulls, of course!), and even a girl dressed as a fox in foxy orange. I also brought my little Bicycle Spirograph machine, and big thanks to my assistant Camy for helping kids draw patterns with that. It was a crazy busy day! — view on Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DC2b4kYINin/

I brought my little Bicycle Spirograph drawing machine to the British Engineerium reopening Winter Makers Fair yesterday! Despite having lived in Brighton since 1992, I never visited the Engineerium when it was open to the public until 2006. So great that it’s open again! Unfortunately the queue to see the museum area itself was too long for me to nip into during a quick break from manning my stall (big up to my brilliant assistant Camy!). I was a late addition to the fair – when I saw it advertised I got in touch to say my drawing machines would be a perfect accompaniment to the giant Victorian steam engines in the building. I could get a taste for this craft fair malarkey. — view on Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DCzcOgjIlnZ/

Back in my geeky happy place, presenting space science in my inflatable planetarium for Science Dome UK, at New Horizons school in Portsmouth. Coincidentally, the name of their school is also the name of the NASA space probe launched in 2006 for a fly-by of Pluto in 2015. The fastest launch of any spacecraft, and it still took 9.5 years to reach the dwarf planet (demoted around the time the probe set off on its long journey). Pictured here are my Solar System one:billion scale models of the planets – umbrella Sun, peppercorn Mercury, stainless steel marble-run Venus/Earth, juniper berry Mars, melon Jupiter, melon/dinner plate Saturn, pool ball Uranus/Neptune. Pluto would be 2.4mm diameter – tiny! If you’d like me to bring my planetarium to your school or science event, get in touch! — view on Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DCrBof-oTRN/
