THURSDAYS at the club we have no assigned club sessions. It’s an opportunity for individuals, arts organisation or others to rent the main studio for their own events either on a weekly basis or as one offs. That will include the use of the kitchen, easels, tables and drawing boards.

Sussex County Arts Club is only a 10-minute walk from Brighton railway station. Very close to SCAC we have the NCP Brighton Theatre multi-storey car park on Church Street and the major bus routes through and into the city will take you to the end of the street.

SCAC is in the centre of the exciting North Laine area and the cultural quarter of Brighton. Close by you will find Brighton Dome, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, the Royal Pavilion, Pavilion Gardens and cafe and the Theatre Royal as well as a myriad of cafes, clothes shops and restaurants.

Costume/Portrait Session

An early work in progress by Liz Staples recently made at the Wednesday Costume/Portrait session.

This session runs every Wednesday from 10am to 1pm. The model is in the same pose and clothing for four consecutive weeks.

Drop-in, no booking required. Bring your own materials. £12 All welcome

A long-standing presence at many of the SCAC weekly sessions is David Hawley David Hawley

David has honed not only his craft but at well-timed moments he likes to unleash his distinctly wry, linguistically nimble witty wordplays.

You may have seen David’s work in our annual exhibition a few weeks ago? He works mainly in oil paint and graphite on canvas and paper.

Of late David’s compositions often include a number of figures in a single painting.

“I love the contrast between controlled, observational painting and the accidental, abstract effects of superimposed images. I also think layering can make the composition more interesting.”

David’s favourite figurative artists include Velazquez, Euan Uglow, Laura Knight, Paula Rego, and David Hockney, who sadly recently put down his brushes.

The influence of Uglow can be detected in the precision, placement and measuring of David’s work.

“Art was the path not taken when I was young. I came to it late in life and it feels like a homecoming.”

Work directly in the heart of Brighton LIVE from the life model at every one of our sessions.

We run 10 sessions every week at Sussex County Arts Club. 9 of them are drop-ins so you do not need to book. Just come along in time for the start of the chosen session.

All the session details are in the link below. You will need to bring your own painting and/or drawing materials.

🚨Today! The Sunday pm Costume session resumes after the annual exhibition.

It is a drop-in session running from 2:30pm-5:30pm every Sunday afternoon.

Work directly from the live model, the same pose for 3-4 weeks.

It’s an opportunity for a long considered artwork, a series of studies from different angles or any other ideas you wish to pursue.

All welcome. £12

The Saturday 3-5pm session is back from tomorrow (30 May) now the festival has ended.

Drop-in, every week. Open to all. Bring your own drawing materials. £10

Now our annual Open House exhibition is over the Saturday and Sunday afternoon sessions will resume from this coming weekend.

Everybody is welcome to any session whatever your level. All our sessions are drop-in except for Life Sculpture on a Friday. See the sessions link in the bio for further details.

WHERE IS SCAC?

The club is up at the end of Bond Street Cottages just off Bond Street in the North Laine area of Brighton. Go to Bond Street and find the Costa Coffee shop. Directly opposite is an alley. You will see the club sign at the end of that alley (about 30 paces).
