Last month we debuted our exciting new chamber ensemble, bringing together outstanding young musicians at the start of their professional careers. 🎵

As well as performing ambitious chamber repertoire, Brighton Spring is nurturing a generation of musicians ready to lead in concert halls, classrooms and communities, and inspiring the young audiences that will one day join them.

We have partnered with local schools to build a sustainable music education network across Sussex and the South East, but we need your help to nurture this ambitious project.

A remarkable chapter in British jazz history

In 1919, the Southern Syncopated Orchestra arrived in Britain from New York, bringing an exciting new sound to British audiences.

Join Professor Catherine Tackley, musicologist and Professor of Music at the University of Liverpool, as she explores the orchestra’s history, its impact on audiences and its influence on the development of popular music in Britain.

"I like the way everything ties up; performing ties up with conducting, composing and teaching. It’s all connected."

Get to know our Music Director and Principal Conductor, Joanna MacGregor CBE.

Favourite childhood musical memory?
Me banging on the upright piano at home, or watching André Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra on the television. I was three, but I played everything by ear. I didn’t actually bother to start reading music until I was about 11.

Favourite inspiration?
I used to go to the theatre a lot in my teens. I loved Lindsay Kemp, an incredible theatre and dance person. I got to know quite a lot of contemporary music because of Ballet Rambert; they used to have live musicians and electronic scores.

Favourite composer?
It always comes back to Bach. But I do love listening to Schubert and Beethoven – as well as John Cage.

Favourite colour?
There’s a certain type of very pale, almost imperceptible blush pink; I’ve planted some peonies in my garden that are pale blush. I’m very pleased with them.

Favourite piece of music?
I think probably The Rite of Spring by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It’s just indestructible and so powerful; it changed everything in the 20th century. It’s thrilling, with lots of moments of beauty.

Favourite memory in a performance?
I remember a performance of Messiaen’s Turangalîla at the Proms in the Albert Hall. There was a fantastic storm above us, with rain coming through the roof. It’s a very long piece – 80 minutes – and I was acutely aware of people arriving in the hall with mops and buckets. Of course, the band played on…

Favourite moments with the Brighton Philharmonic?
We’ve just performed Shostakovich’s profound 10th Symphony with William Kendritge’s film Oh to Believe in Another World. The Brighton Phil played magnificently; it’s a symphony all orchestral players want to play.

Favourite thing about Sussex?
The landscape; and I visit Glyndebourne all over summer. Friends of mine come down every year and we do one night at the Love Supreme festival in Glynde Place and one night at Glyndebourne.

Favourite season?
I’m rather fond of winter; it’s partly because I like Anglo-Saxon poetry, which is always set in the winter.

Alongside it, Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments offers moments of haunting stillness, before Mozart’s glorious Gran Partita fills Brighton Dome with some of the richest, most radiant wind writing ever composed.
