Founded in 2006 by Pallant House Gallery, Outside In aims to provide opportunities for artists with a desire to create who see themselves as facing a barrier to the art world for reasons including health, disability or social circumstance. The goal of the project is to create a fairer art world which rejects traditional values and institutional judgements about whose work can and should be display

ed. Since its inception, Outside In has engaged more than 5,000 artists traditionally excluded from the mainstream art world, 170,000 audience members and 80 partner organisations nationally. We have held over 30 exhibitions and currently support 2,000 artists. In 2014, we won the prestigious Charity Award in the Arts, Culture and Heritage category. Additionally, Outside In is now able to offer an increasingly international platform for the artists it supports, having taken part in the 2014 Paris Outsider Art Fair, and being on the board of the European Outsider Art Association. The project also runs Outside In: Step Up; a programme providing training for artists who align themselves with the project. Artists on the programme have the opportunity to be trained to lead workshops and to carry out research.

INSPIRATION: Outside In’s Artist of the Month for May has been Jason Hall .01, an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of connection, belonging, and the rebuilding of fractured communities. Pictured here are some of his early works using lard and tar as an experimental painting medium 🎨

Jason is currently exploring how the root-like structure of fungi called 'mycelium' can be used as a sustainable sculptural material. He told us:

"I’m interested in creating work that uses sustainable materials but can also degrade over time and become part of the environment that its placed in."

He is also developing Pipedream, an innovative project transforming a narrowboat into a floating artist studio and residency space for q***r and neurodiverse artists. The project reimagines waterways as sites for creativity, community, and respite from neurotypical spaces, with its first residency set to launch this summer ✨

Read the full interview on our website as Jason shares more about his journey into art, experimentation with mycelium, and process developing ambitious, community-driven projects.

This month's Disability Card Deck feature is 'Healing'🃏

The healing process can look different to all of us. What does healing mean to you?
Is there something that helps you feel strong again after going though a difficult time?

The Disability Card Deck is a project by Outside In artist . We are sharing one card a month from the deck to encourage inclusive and intersectional conversations around neurodivergence and disability with our artists.

The deck contains 48 individually illustrated cards. The reverse of each illustration shares a description, questions and conversational prompts to help with awareness and advocacy.

🔗 Visit 's page to find links to their website and learn more about the deck.

INSPIRATION: Outside In’s Artist of the Month for May is Jason Hall, .01, an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of connection, belonging, and the rebuilding of fractured communities. 🎨

Asking Jason about his standout moment as an artist so far, he told us about staging a drag foosball tournament in Brighton Jubilee Library as part of The Justin Campaign - an anti-homophobia campaign and activist artwork that was founded in 2008 by himself and other players from the gay football team in Brighton.

The Justin Campaign (2008-11) and Football vs Homophobia (est. 2011) went on to receive international recognition and press coverage. Football vs. Homophobia is now the official anti-homophobia initiative for the F.A. and The Justin Campaign is permanently housed in the National Football Museum ⚽
