Founded in 2006 by Pallant House Gallery, Outside In aims to provide opportunities for artists with a desire to create who see themselves as facing a barrier to the art world for reasons including health, disability or social circumstance. The goal of the project is to create a fairer art world which rejects traditional values and institutional judgements about whose work can and should be display

ed. Since its inception, Outside In has engaged more than 5,000 artists traditionally excluded from the mainstream art world, 170,000 audience members and 80 partner organisations nationally. We have held over 30 exhibitions and currently support 2,000 artists. In 2014, we won the prestigious Charity Award in the Arts, Culture and Heritage category. Additionally, Outside In is now able to offer an increasingly international platform for the artists it supports, having taken part in the 2014 Paris Outsider Art Fair, and being on the board of the European Outsider Art Association. The project also runs Outside In: Step Up; a programme providing training for artists who align themselves with the project. Artists on the programme have the opportunity to be trained to lead workshops and to carry out research.

This month's Disability Card Deck feature is 'Time' ⏰

Experiences of time can be shaped, enhanced or distorted for disabled and neurodivergent people in ways not always visible. The reverse of this card invites us to reflect on our own relationships with time and the ways we might adjust it around our needs when everyday demands of schedules, appointments and deadlines don't always account for these experiences.

The Disability Card Deck is a project by Outside In artist . We are sharing one card a month from the deck to encourage inclusive and intersectional conversations around neurodivergence and disability.

The deck contains 48 individually illustrated cards. The reverse of each illustration shares a description, questions and conversational prompts to help with awareness and advocacy.

🔗 Visit 's page to find links to their website and learn more about the deck.

Opportunity: Thinking about applying for Radical Craft Development Lab, but not sure if it's for you?

We've noticed that many artists rule themselves out before applying because they're unsure what we mean by 'emerging' or 'craft'. The truth is, there isn't one right pathway into the programme.

We're looking for women artists based in the West Midlands who are ready to develop their practice, connect with other artists and explore new ways of making, whatever your medium.

The programme includes:
✨ A four-month in person artist development programme
✨ Peer support
✨ A £50 travel bursary

🔗link in bio for full information.

If you're still unsure whether the programme is right for you, get in touch, we're always happy to answer questions. Please email [email protected]

This programme is generously supported by the John Feeney Trust

OUR STORY: For 20 years Outside In has been supporting artists. An important part of this work has been our free artist support days which began as artist surgeries which we ran with partner institutions such as Pallant House Gallery, Creative Futures, Venture Arts, ArtAngel Dundee, Disability Arts Cymru, and Redwing Gallery, Penzance.

Fifteen years on we continue to offer sessions to support our artists with all areas of their creative practice - free support with applying for opportunities, funding or gaining confidence to speak about their work.

We regularly run online artist support days and currently have dates available for support with applications to our open call:
📅 11 August, 4 September, 25 September, 22 October.

To book your slot, get in touch with our Artist Development team at [email protected]
