BLT are very saddened to hear the news of the death of Katie Brownings, NVT's artistic director:
"It is with profound sorrow that we write to tell you that the NVT’s Artistic Director, Katie Brownings, has died. She was 67.
Katie had been a member here for more than 40 years. She initially joined in 1983, later appearing in the first production ever staged in the Studio. Over the following decades, Katie took on a remarkable range of duties within the theatre. These included directing, producing, stage management and numerous acting roles.
For the past six years, Katie also served on the NVT’s committee as Artistic Director. Each season, she helped shape the theatre’s output, while establishing initiatives to nurture new Writers and Directors alike. She also worked hard to foster an inclusive atmosphere, equally valuing each cast and crew member.
Among NVT members, Katie was known for her kindness, enthusiasm and honesty, and for her generosity when working with others. As an actor, she also brought great empathy to her performances. Her NVT credits include Masterpieces, Educating Rita, Be My Baby, The Herd and 4000 Days.
Katie died peacefully on the evening of Saturday 22nd August, surrounded by loved ones. In consultation with the family, we will announce details of Katie’s funeral when appropriate. Our thoughts are with Katie’s family, her partner Mike, and her many friends at this incredibly difficult time.
Commenting on the news, close friend Pat Boxall said, “Katie was part of the fabric of the NVT for more than 40 years. She was not only a wonderful actor and Artistic Director, but also a great friend. Her passing is a profound loss that will be felt by so many of us.”
Naturally, the NVT is committed to delivering next season’s programme in alignment with Katie’s vision. To that end, Charly Sommers will begin serving as Acting Artistic Director with immediate effect. The membership will elect a new Artistic Director at the AGM in November. We also plan to announce a tribute to Katie. For now, we invite you to sign the book of condolence in the bar at the NVT. If you’re unable to do so, please email [email protected] to share your thoughts.
Warm regards,
The Trustees

BLT send their deep condolences to Katie’s family, friends and all who knew her.
