PTSD affects more than memories

Trauma can disrupt many of our core emotional needs.
According to Human Givens, we all need:
• Security
• Attention
• Emotional connection
• Autonomy and control
• Meaning and purpose
• Community
• Achievement and competence

When PTSD is present, these needs can become harder to meet.
You may avoid people.
Feel disconnected.
Lose confidence.
Struggle to feel safe.
Withdraw from things you once enjoyed.

Part of healing involves gradually restoring balance and helping these needs be met in healthy ways.

Recovery isn’t just reducing symptoms.
It’s rebuilding life.

The government has responded to report into maternity failings at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
The government’s initial response includes a set of patient safety measures for all maternity services in England:

1. Mothers and babies will be protected by Martha’s Rule - the right to an urgent independent review - to be rolled out across all maternity and neonatal settings in England.

2. NHS staff - past and present - who refuse to engage with upcoming maternity reviews will be compelled to give evidence or face up to two years in prison.

3. New tougher checks and measures on mortuaries to ensure the remains of children are treated with dignity and respect.

Clea Harmer, Chief Executive, Sands - baby loss charity said: “We welcome the Government’s plans to strengthen both the voice of parents and the accountability of NHS staff, by rolling out Martha’s Rule across all maternity and neonatal settings in England, and compelling NHS staff to give evidence to maternity reviews.
“The serious and sustained maternity failures in Nottingham painfully highlighted how parents and families were not listened to, and how staff - particularly senior executives and board members - have until now been able to refuse to engage with maternity reviews.

I too welcome the government’s commitment to urgently deliver the meaningful, lasting change that families have long been asking for.

The publication of the Ockenden Nottingham report is a reminder of the importance of listening to families, acting on concerns, and ensuring that learning leads to meaningful change.
No one needs a story of shattered dreams and hopes for what was expected
No parent should have to fight to be heard.
No family should experience avoidable harm.
And no report should sit on a shelf without action.

Imagine living in a house where a fire once broke out.
🚨The smoke alarm did exactly what it was designed to do.

It alerted everyone to danger.
It kept people alive.

🔥But after the fire was extinguished, the alarm never switched off.

🧯Now it sounds every time a whiff or a sniff of smoke the toast burning in the toaster,
Every time steam rises from a shower.
Every time someone lights a candle.

🚨The alarm isn’t broken.
It’s trying to do its job.

It’s simply responding to everything as if it’s dangerous

PTSD can feel similar.

🔥The nervous system learns that danger is everywhere.
Recovery isn’t about ripping the alarm from the ceiling.
It’s about helping the system recognise that the fire is over.
The alarm can finally rest.
And so can you.

I often hear stories of terror, fear, unresolved trauma, and feelings of failure or loss.
And if I could gather all of those people together and show them one thing, it would be this:
Their brain is not working against them.
Often, it is a brain that has become overwhelmed, or a nervous system that is trying its very best to protect them.
Anxiety isn’t a sign that you’re failing.
It’s often a sign that your mind and body have been carrying too much for too long.
And be careful what you tell yourself about healing.
If you’re constantly told, “This will take years,” your brain may begin to expect years.
Of course, some people carrying complex trauma need more time and support, and that’s okay.
But healing isn’t measured by a calendar.
It’s measured by the small shifts that happen along the way.
The calmer breath.
The better night’s sleep.
The moment you notice you’re responding differently.
The difficult day that feels just a little more manageable.
You’re not doing anything wrong.
And with gentle nervous system regulation, compassionate support, and a trauma-informed approach, healing is possible.
Not by forcing yourself to get over it.
But one small step at a time.
Because when we understand why we feel the way we do, we can begin to respond to ourselves with kindness rather than criticism.
And that’s often where healing begins.

There’s something powerful about deciding you matter too.

I spent years pushing through exhaustion and ignoring what my body needed.
Now I’m trying to support myself differently.
More movement.
More nourishment.
More rest.
More consistency.
I’ve also been adding collagen daily as part of that routine — especially as I get older and become more intentional about supporting my skin, joints and overall wellbeing.
It’s not about chasing perfection.
It’s about feeling stronger, calmer and more connected to myself again.

Working as a psychotherapist PTSD is viewed as an understandable reaction to overwhelming events.

When traumatic memories remain emotionally “unfiled,” they can continue to intrude into everyday life through flashbacks, nightmares, and heightened stress responses.

The good news?

The mind already has natural mechanisms for processing emotional experiences.

Human Givens therapy works to:
✓ Reduce emotional arousal
✓ Help traumatic memories become properly processed
✓ Restore a sense of calm and control
✓ Reconnect people with their emotional needs and resources

Recovery isn’t about reliving trauma repeatedly.
It’s about helping the brain complete a process that was interrupted.
Healing can happen faster than many people imagine.

The pain of grief, loss and trauma is not something to erase.

Trauma doesn’t work that way, and neither does grief.

Instead of asking, How do I make this go away? try asking, How do I give myself space to feel this?

Let yourself grieve.
Let yourself rage.
Let yourself feel nothing at all if that’s what today brings.

Healing doesn’t mean forcing yourself to be okay—it means allowing yourself to move through it in your own way.
