Brighton Open Air Theatre

Brighton Open Air Theatre Brighton and Hove's only permanent outdoor venue. We are looking forward to kicking off our new season for 2024 in May. All shows will be on sale in March ..

We’ve got something for everyone, with stand-up comedy, drag and music shows dotted throughout the season, with some returning favourites along with new faces. Family entertainment is also in abundance, with The Wizard of Oz; Beatrix Potter's Jemima Puddleduck; Peter Pan plus Oliver Twist. Our season launches with a brand new co-production of our founder Adrian Bunting’s seminal play Kemble’s Riot

, in a co-production with Brighton Little Theatre. Kemble’s Riot uproariously dramatizes the 66-night riot in 1809 when, having rebuilt the Covent Garden Theatre after a fire, its manager John Kemble and his sister-star Sarah Siddons put the entry price up by sixpence to pay for it. Kemble’s Riot won the Best Play Award on its debut at Brighton Fringe in 2011 and rave reviews followed from its run at Edinburgh Fringe in 2012. It wouldn’t be an outdoor theatre season without a healthy dose of Shakespeare, and this year we have Henry V, As You Like It & Julius Caesar. In addition to all of this, we have improvisation, opera, musicals, dance and so much more. So pack your picnic, don your sunglasses, and join us in D**e Road Park for another summer of fabulous outdoor entertainment.

☀️ BOAT is open and our shows are going ahead as planned! 🌿

When we said “everything under the sun”, we really did mean it... 😅

We're keeping an eye on the skies to make sure you're safe, but for now we're of the mind that the weather may be hot, but our shows are even hotter! 🥵

If you're joining us, here are a few tips to help you stay comfortable:

💧 Bring plenty of water
🧴 Don't forget your suncream
⛱️ A hat, parasol, or brolly can be great for shade
👕 Wear light, comfortable clothing
🍦 Treat yourself to something cool from the bar

Our wonderful volunteers will be on hand throughout the events, and we'll be keeping a close eye on conditions to make sure everyone can enjoy their visit safely and comfortably. ☀️

A real hidden gem in the city is the stunning Brighton Open Air Theatre - the brainchild of the late, great Adrian Bunting, a local playwright, performer and University of Brighton alum.

Throughout the warmer months they have a great range of shows including comedy, plays, music and even wrestling! 🤼‍♂️

Pictured in the photo are Brighton improv group The Noise Next Door performing at the venue on a glorious day last summer ☀️

Who has been to a show here or is planning on attending one this summer? 👇

🎪 The circus is coming to BOAT... although not all of it!

Sat 27 & Sun 28 June, 2pm

When a clerical error sends the performers to entirely the wrong venue, self-proclaimed "World's Greatest Showman" Rex Bartholomew and his long-suffering stagehand Darren are left to put on the entire circus themselves.

Juggling? Check.
Fire-eating? Check.
Lion-taming? Well... sort of.

Expect mishaps, mayhem, audience participation, custard pies, squirting water, and a special appearance from Leslie the Lion in this gloriously chaotic family comedy.
