Brighton Open Air Theatre

Brighton Open Air Theatre Brighton and Hove's only permanent outdoor venue. We are looking forward to kicking off our new season for 2024 in May. All shows will be on sale in March ..

We’ve got something for everyone, with stand-up comedy, drag and music shows dotted throughout the season, with some returning favourites along with new faces. Family entertainment is also in abundance, with The Wizard of Oz; Beatrix Potter's Jemima Puddleduck; Peter Pan plus Oliver Twist. Our season launches with a brand new co-production of our founder Adrian Bunting’s seminal play Kemble’s Riot

, in a co-production with Brighton Little Theatre. Kemble’s Riot uproariously dramatizes the 66-night riot in 1809 when, having rebuilt the Covent Garden Theatre after a fire, its manager John Kemble and his sister-star Sarah Siddons put the entry price up by sixpence to pay for it. Kemble’s Riot won the Best Play Award on its debut at Brighton Fringe in 2011 and rave reviews followed from its run at Edinburgh Fringe in 2012. It wouldn’t be an outdoor theatre season without a healthy dose of Shakespeare, and this year we have Henry V, As You Like It & Julius Caesar. In addition to all of this, we have improvisation, opera, musicals, dance and so much more. So pack your picnic, don your sunglasses, and join us in D**e Road Park for another summer of fabulous outdoor entertainment.

Step into the magical world of Pinocchio ✨

Monday 31st August, 4pm

Illyria bring Carlo Collodi’s much-loved classic to BOAT in a thrilling musical outdoor production.

When childless toymaker Geppetto buys a piece of wood to make a puppet, he has no idea of the chaos he is about to unleash. Pinocchio longs for adventure and runs away, but soon discovers that the world beyond home is full of glorious attractions, hidden dangers and unexpected lessons.

Running away hasn’t worked. Lying won’t work. If Pinocchio is to find the belonging he craves, he’ll have to discover what it really means to become a real boy.

A magical coming-of-age adventure, brought to life with music, imagination and the theatrical flair of Illyria.

BOAT needs your help ... again.

We wanted to let you know that the proposed BHASVIC artificial pitches have been recommended for approval and will go before the planning committee next Wednesday. This is pretty heartbreaking news for BOAT – if it goes through, the hours of use will have a huge impact on the future of our theatre.

Our position remains a straight objection to the proposed pitches. However, we also need to prepare for the possibility that they are approved and do everything we can to protect BOAT if they are.

We’re asking you to contact your local councillors and make clear that, if the planning application is approved, the following hours of use should be adopted and written into the planning approval:

October–April: no restrictions

May–September (term time):
Weekdays: until 6pm
Saturdays: until 12 noon
Sundays: no use

Summer half-term & main summer holidays: no use

These hours would still give students full use of the pitches during term time, while avoiding clashes with the vast majority of our performances.

The planning committee meets next Wednesday, so if you’re able to contact your councillors, please do so as soon as you can. Every message really does help.

Thank you, as always, for standing with BOAT. 🌿

Scandal, secrets and Oscar Wilde’s wicked wit. 🪭✨

Thursday 27th August, 7pm

DOT Productions bring Lady Windermere’s Fan to BOAT for a sparkling evening of sharp dialogue, social satire and deliciously tangled relationships.

When Lady Windermere begins to suspect her husband’s loyalty, the arrival of a mysterious woman threatens to turn her carefully ordered world upside down. What follows is a whirlwind of gossip, temptation, mistaken intentions and revelations that challenge everything she thought she knew.

With just five actors, inventive staging and playful character doubling, this nimble new adaptation brings Wilde’s classic comedy to life with plenty of charm, elegance and mischief.

Come for the wit, stay for the scandal. 🪭

Camelot has a problem… and Arthur is probably not the man for the job. ⚔️👑

Wednesday 26th August, 7pm

The Three Inch Fools bring King Arthur and the Holy Fail to BOAT for an evening of medieval mayhem, ridiculous quests and legendary nonsense.

When Camelot is rocked by a tragic - and frankly improbable - incident involving a large table of an undisclosed shape, Arthur is thrust into the quest of a lifetime.

Expect daring knights, endless jousting, blistering cold, scorching fire, questionable chivalry and a whole lot of theatrical chaos.

Will Arthur save the realm? Will destiny cooperate? Will anyone make it through the evening with their dignity intact?

Saddle up - things are about to get legendary. 🐎

What happens when a story refuses to end? ✒️✨

Wednesday 19th – Saturday 22nd August

Brighton Little Theatre Co return to BOAT with The Watsons - a sparkling, mischievous comedy where Jane Austen’s unfinished novel gets a life of its own.

Emma Watson is 19, newly back at home and facing the pressures of society, marriage and money. So far, so Austen…

But there’s one small problem: Austen never finished the story.

Now the characters must decide what happens next. Can they escape the roles they’ve been given? Can they write their own endings?

Brimming with wit, theatrical magic and Austen-inspired charm, The Watsons asks what happens when the people inside a story start taking control.

From the team behind Brighton Little Theatre’s award-winning Jane Eyre, this is a playful and inventive new theatrical adventure.
