A few weeks ago, we embraced the art of letting go with a papercutting workshop inspired by Eric Carle () and Louise Lockhart (). The mothers took scissors to their paintings and prints—sometimes even each other’s—and we ended up with some stunning results. It was also a lovely reminder of mothers working alongside their children, creating even with arms full.

The room was full of a beautiful energy, with all the mothers working together to create collaborative images while chatting, and children enjoying the garden or sticking close by.

This book is really coming together, and many of these images have helped shape some of the final spreads. We can’t wait to share more soon. In the meantime, an exciting update is coming tomorrow—watch our pages for more… ✨

What a pleasure it was to be painting by the fire circle for our sunset workshop. It was great watching the children play in the garden while the mothers took turns painting sunsets at our table. So many beautiful paintings were created, and we can’t wait to see them make it into our book.

With the dust now settled on Nightlight Lullabies, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the scale and impact of the project.

- 21 hearing mothers created A Lullaby for Derby, recorded in both audio and British Sign Language.
- 41 students and parents who are deaf developed The Signing Mother, A Visual Vernacular For Derby film.
- 6096 Visitors to our exhibition at Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
- 16 young people who are deaf and 10 museum volunteers trained as video and oral historians, recognising that their own stories are heritage — and worth preserving.
- 75,000 Total views, plays, and interactions across social media with our work.

Thank you to everyone who gave their time, care and creativity to be part of this important project.

A sneak peek at these beautiful prints from our Mothers Circle | Langley Green printing workshop week — we can’t wait to see everyone’s hard work all put together. Mothers experimented with both relief and monoprinting, with gorgeous outcomes. Printmaking was a real dive into embracing the imperfections and unpredictability of the process. Thank you to all our mothers and little ones for taking part!

Mothers Circle | Langley Green has been a total joy these past few weeks. Watching the mothers make time for creativity and explore alternative ways of creating has been wonderful. It’s been especially lovely to watch the beautiful balance of making alongside little ones.
Our first workshop with guest artist Sam Cowell saw our mothers experimenting with mark-making using a wide range of materials, with the eventual goal of creating some beautiful collaborative illustrations. Watch this space!
