Ernie, the one eyed pug. Update.

So this is the background in and complete. It's really providing that sense of 'depth of field' you get from a photograph with it being so blurred out... Apparently it's the client's dressing gown and red leather sofa that Ernie is looking up from.

I've also built up more contrast across the ears using my "graphitints" - they're great for adding dark contrasts that are not just "cold or warm" shades of grey, but have really nice subtle dark hues that you can use to pull out those hidden colours you find in dark fur, not just the obvious reds and browns but also the purples, greens and blues...

Three background is blocked is more or less done, or at least it's blocked in...

I've now begun to turn my attention back to Ernie and try and add some contrast, using his ears at this point to try to balance out the overall piece...

You also get a sense of the scale of the image, thanks to my keyboard and pencils left in frame - it's about 42cm x 42cm in total...

Ernie, the one eyed pug. Update.

So I've got the main bulk of Ernie's head blocked in, the fur grain/growth and rough placement of wrinkle folds.

Time to look at the background... Something I don't normally do, but in this case, because I wanted to cover the whole piece I need to start working that up. Because of the nature of the image I'm working from, there's a lot of negative space that goes to define the shape of Ernie's head, plus because there's a load of blur I need to play fast and loose with my technique. It's less about precision and more about being deliberately fuzzy...

Ernie, the one eyed pug. Update.

Having focused on the texture and tone of Ernie's nose, I build up the texture of the muzzle and work more into the detail of his eye.

It's important for me to capture the subjects 'face' early on in a job, the expression and character comes mostly from the eyes - by capturing this sooner it gives me the time over the duration of the rest of piece to really analyse whether I've really 'got it' - changes are much easier to address at this point than later.

Ernie, the one eyed pug. Update.

Here I'm building up the texture and colour profile of Ernie's nose, I like to work with and enhance the underlying intrinsic colour that is present, but perhaps not that obvious, use that as a base register and then layer tone and build up contrast as the overall piece progresses.

I feel this results in a more complex, richer image with nuanced colour palette in the fur and skin patterns and textures.

Sneak glimpse of my latest work.

Ernie, the one eyed pug... A much larger piece than I usually do, working on A2, trying to fill as much of the page as I can.

This is a few steps in, having blocked in the main colour groups and worked up the (only) eye...
