The Dorset Stone Carver

The Dorset Stone Carver Bespoke stonework commissions and stone carving courses with a classically trained craftsman. Based in the Marshwood Vale within the AONB of West Dorset UK.

Stone carving commissions & courses based in the Marshwood Vale, West Dorset. The Dorset Stone Carver specialises in beautiful, hand crafted, bespoke stonework. We take pride in the fact that all our pieces are carved by hand in house by a talented crafts person using traditional tools and techniques that have barely changed for centuries. We work closely alongside our clients to ensure that they

are happy with every last detail of our work. All products are carved from natural stone and are completely unique. We have worked extensively within the heritage industry and alongside artists, designers and architects to create stunning ornamental stonework, bespoke promotional items, high end signage, lifestyle objects and much more. New for 2024!! We are now running stone carving and sculpture courses from our studio based in the rolling hills of the Marshwood Vale within the AONB of West Dorset. We offer courses for all levels, from complete beginners looking to test the waters or just have some fun through to more experienced stone workers looking to hone their skills and everything in-between. We are also happy to tailor an experience to meet your needs or host away days for you and your colleagues. Courses are taught using traditional tools and methods which have barely changed since medieval times. We feel it is so important to keep these skills alive and want to share our excitement for the craft with future generations. Stone carving is good for mind, body and soul! Local towns Bridport, Lyme Regis and Charmouth are a stones throw away as is the world heritage site of the Jurassic coast with all its fossil hunting delights. Camping is available within a couple of minutes walk from the studio and there are also plenty of B&Bs, hotels and campsites within the surrounding area. If you are looking for things to do in Dorset why not visit us to learn a new skill and stay to explore the wonders of the local area! Visit www.thedorsetstonecarver.co.uk to book.

What does craft mean to you? I think of craft more as a state of mind. A place of peace where steady rythms rule and muscle memory takes over. Where ancient traditions give birth to modern ideas and objects. Am I an artist, a sculptor or craftsperson? A combo of all three? Does it matter? All I know is I've alway been driven to make and I'm extremely happy to still be doing so after all this time! Thanks for popping in to say hi over the years and taking such fabulous pics!

Next week is and I'm showing this piece alongside other talented artists at an exhibition curated by kindly hosted by

"A gentleman buys his hats at Locks, his shoes at Lobbs, his shirts at Harvie and Hudson, his suits at Huntsman and his cheese at Paxton and Whitfield" -Winston Churchill

Ps a gentleman can now also get his sculpture at Paxtons too!

Five concentric rings on the fifth of the fifth. Life is filled with synchronicities right now! Feels very significant this is being finished today. The front and back are hand carved with alternating textures to create contrast between that all important light and shadow.

Carved in Portland limestone this disk represents five stages, five skins, five breakthroughs. Creating a powerful portal! Available on a plinth for a striking focal point in the garden or within the home.

Currently not dedicated for any exhibitions so please dm with any enquiries.

Really excited to have been selected to show work at Beyond Horizons this year! What a setting and the most amazing grounds! Definately one for the diary folks!

Beyond Horizons will be Stoberry Park Garden’s largest sculpture exhibition to date, building on a series of highly successful ‘Art in the Garden’ exhibitions, held here since 2001.

It is timed to coincide with Somerset Art Works (19 Sept – 4 Oct), which attracts around 50,000 visitors annually, and NGS open weekend (12-13 Sept), which raised over £3.8 million for charities from garden admissions in the UK last year.

Stoberry Park has breathtaking views over Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor and the Vale of Avalon, and the all-season  5 ½ acre  Stoberry garden is planted sympathetically within its landscape providing stunning combinations of vistas accented with sculptures, wildlife ponds, and water features. The 1 ½ acre walled garden is full of interesting planting: colour and interest for every season with wildflower area and modern rockery.

The house and gardens have been featured in national press, on BBC and Channel 4 and are recommended by The Lonely Planet, ‘1,000 Places to see Before You Die’ and in the recent book ‘Secret Gardens of Somerset’.  Members of the National Garden Scheme, owners Frances and Tim Meeres-Young are art collectors and use their grounds to exhibit work by emerging and established contemporary artists

Recently I spent a couple of days in the grounds of a beautiful Dorset estate carrying out some letter carving using one of my fave letterforms from Tom Perkins.

Surprised by joy - impatient as the Wind by William Wordsworth. Carved into some very challenging shelly Purbeck (I think.. 🤔)

Letter carving is an artform in itself taking great patience and tool control. I'm by no means a master letter carver but being able to fully relax and enjoy the process with confidence in the end result is mastery enough for me 😊

Nothing moves quickly with stone and it can be easy to be a little daunted by the prospect of starting a new piece. Patience and planning is key. This block from Yorkshire was three times the size originally as I have split it down for other work over the years.

This little clip shows the bullet points of an average first day when making a larger scale work. Getting all the dust and algae off to reveal the colours within, seemingly endless hours drilling through the block to tell it where to break. Then plug and feathers are used as they have for hundreds of years to create pressure through the weak point. Lots of tapping and if all goes to plan the satisfaction of a split just about where you wanted it is wonderful payment for all your hard work!

This couldnt have gone better but it defintely doesnt always when working with a natural material. I look forward to sharing this as we progress!

This small commission left the nest yesterday. My clients commissioned a simpler version as a gift for a friend last year and liked it so much they treated themselves to a slightly more complex version.

Caramel alabaster on Portland limestone base. I can make these to suit any budget and more or less always have one on the go so do let me know if you would like something similar. For this cluster style so far prices have ranged from £400-£15,000 and everything inbetween!

Alabaster entanglement. Another piece soon to be available via .source who I am very happy to be showing work with.

Alabaster is a truly magical material. Often translucent with such variety in colour and veining even across a small area. 👉 scroll to last pic to see how the light radiates through the forms.

Polyphant entanglement. 👉 take a look how the colours change through the various angles. Polyphant is a soapstone from Cornwall here in the UK. It's kind of blue but kind of green whilst sort of grey and partly black with a multitude of flecks thrown in for good measure! An exploration of an endless intertwined movement.

This piece will soon be available via
