Spent a glorious couple of weeks in Pembrokeshire recently, and I even stole a few minutes for some quick sketches. My camera roll is now full of inspiration for future prints (for when I don’t have a cute wee limpet stuck to me quite so much of the day! 🐣)

So excited to have my print “Last Light at Godrevy” included in this years Printmaking Competition this year 💙 This wonderful exhibition of all things great and inky is open NOW! Details ➡️

“Last Light at Godrevy” is a reduction woodcut print made up of 11 layers. It is part of a limited edition of 10, printed using Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash Relief Inks using extender and thin layers to gradually build up the image. I’ve sought to reflect the Cornish coast at its most dramatic, when a storm has frothed up the sea and the last light of the sun is just peeking through the storm clouds at dusk. This piece forms part of my recent body of work exploring the varied landscape of the United Kingdom. I work mainly in linocut, although in recent years I have enjoyed exploring different printmaking techniques, often combining them to create new effects, and finding which technique best suits each subject. For this piece I opted for woodcut because I felt the additional texture brought by the woodgrain perfectly complemented the drama of the scene. I am drawn to the reduction technique for more complex subjects such as this, as it allows me to work intuitively and fluidly.

Here are the fab prints I received back from participating in a print exchange for the first time. The theme was “Open”, and it’s great to see how differently people have interpreted it, and how much their individual styles vary! This is what I love about printmaking, it’s so personal and versatile 🖤 Big thanks to Alice for organising the exchange, I’ll definitely take part again someday! I’ve tagged the artists so you can go and check them out!

This is my first sketch in 8 months and my first as a new mum. While that second detail shouldn’t really affect the sketch in itself, it kind of feels like it did - finding time to sketch is now even harder as I have a precious (demanding!) eating-and-pooing machine to take care of, so the act of sketching felt both therapeutic and mum-guilt-inducing. Who am I to take time to sketch while my baban is hungry and has just filled his nappy? Luckily, my wonderful other half took care of that and Finn got to enjoy* (*scream throughout 😅) his first nappy change on a beach. North Wales is fast becoming one of my favourite places in the world, swipe to see some of the reasons why 💚

Final layer incoming! FINALLY 😅 I’ve taken my sweet time over this moody seascape woodcut, it’s 11 layers of inky goodness in total. I really enjoyed trying out woodcut, especially loved the feel and sound of carving each layer, and I’m happy that some subtle woodgrain shows through and lends some added texture to the finished print.
Sound on for some printmaking ASMR and doggo tappy toes.

Layer 10 incoming, Otto the temp studio dog showing me some treasures he found (including my socks, of course!) OK, so I know I said this would be the last layer, but for me printmaking is a fluid see-how-you-go process, and I think I fancy putting one more layer down. I might just have to stare at it for a bit while I decide!
Sound on for some printmaking ASMR and doggo tappy toes.

Layer 9 incoming, featuring my very cute and distracting temp studio dog, Otto. Hopefully just one more layer to go on this reduction woodcut, bringing out the detail of the rocks in the middle. Sound on for some printmaking ASMR and doggo tappy toes.
