Today we remember Raymond Gurême. 🕯️

Born on 11 August 1925, he survived persecution, internment and war, and later became one of the important voices keeping the memory of the Roma Genocide alive.

His life speaks of dignity, resistance, and the duty to never let this history be forgotten.

Did you know one of the greatest guitarists of all time was a Romani man?

Django Reinhardt changed the world of music forever. Born into a Romani family in 1910, he became a pioneer of Gypsy Jazz (Jazz Manouche), inspiring generations of musicians with his breathtaking talent.

At just 18 years old, Django was badly injured in a caravan fire. Doctors believed he would never play guitar again after two fingers on his left hand were left permanently paralysed. But he refused to give up.

Instead, Django developed a completely unique playing style, using mainly two fingers for his incredible solos. His determination transformed what many saw as a disability into one of the most distinctive sounds in music history.

As his reputation grew, Django became one of the stars of Paris' vibrant jazz scene. During the 1940s, he and his family opened La Roulotte, a Romani-inspired club and restaurant in Paris. More than just a venue, it became a gathering place where music, food and Romani culture came together, welcoming musicians, artists and visitors from across the city. 🇫🇷

His influence can still be heard today, with artists across jazz, rock and blues citing him as an inspiration.

Django's story is more than music - it's a story of Romani resilience, creativity and perseverance against the odds. His legacy reminds us that Romani people have not only preserved their culture, but have shaped the world's culture too.

🌹 Usnija Redžepova 🌹

Throughout history, Roma artists have performed on some of the world's biggest stages—and sometimes for world leaders.

One of them was Usnija Redžepova, widely regarded as one of the greatest Romani voices of the former Yugoslavia.

Born into a Romani family in Skopje in 1946, Usnija devoted more than four decades to music. Renowned for her powerful voice and captivating stage presence, she performed traditional Romani and Balkan music across Europe, recorded numerous albums, and enjoyed a successful career as an actress, becoming a proud ambassador for Romani culture.

One of the most remarkable moments of her career came during a state reception attended by Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

According to Usnija's own recollection, the microphone cable was too short for her to reach the table where the world leaders were seated. As she began to sing, Fidel Castro was so captivated by her performance that he stood up, picked up his chair and carried it closer so he could watch her from just a metre away. Tito followed, and soon many of the other guests had done the same.

Usnija later recalled that Castro requested several encores before inviting her to visit Cuba, describing her as "enchanting." Tito reportedly smiled and joked, "At this rate, we're going to lose Usnija!"

From intimate performances to international stages, Usnija Redžepova shared the beauty of Romani music with audiences around the world. Her legacy is a powerful reminder of the immense talent, creativity and cultural richness that Roma people have contributed to music, theatre and the arts for generations.
