Chris Rea wrote Steel River as a tribute to his roots in Middlesbrough, and the River Tees. Richard recounts his own memories of the river, the area and his special talent that earned him a trip into a Bob Mortimore anecdote.

'The Worst First Gigs', 'Top, Middle or Bottom', 'I Do….Or Maybe I Don’t…', 'Talk, Talk, Talk, Talk, Talk Shows'

This weeks Battenberg is presented by Penelope Catchpole (Jane Gamble) and Brad (Richard Sara).

The possible chaos associated with you and your band’s very first gig is the stuff of nightmares. There are broken bones and broken dreams in these stories, but Jane is here to mop your tears.

Richard premieres his new idea for a game show concerned with identifying the area of the body where strangely named body parts reside. On hearing the name of the body part, participants must shout 'Top, Middle or Bottom' to identify where on the body the body part is. Play along radio at its most frivolous.

There are moves afoot to rejig the laws to do with wedding days. Would you want to celebrate your special day by exchanging vows while white water rafting? No? Just as well, says Jane, as the powers that be won’t have it, either. There’s more….

Talk Talk - Talk Talk, introduces a conversation on UK Talk Show hosts over the years. Richard and Jane agree on Parky's sexist treatment of female guests, and Claudia Winkelman's decision not to continue her chatting with celebrities after just one series.

'When Our Rock Gods Grow Up', 'VIP Lanes', 'Are We Still Cross About The Norman Invasion….?', 'Neo-Liberalism'.

There was a time when the pop stars of our youth were, well, grungy. They had the odd bit of bad behaviour to their credit, too. Now, our crinkly rock stars have gone all respectable. And very wealthy, of course. What has happened? asks Jane .

Richard probably needs some therapy! Covid-19 VIP Lanes to provide PPE for our front-line NHS staff, wasted £9.9 billion. Richard disagrees with Baroness Hallett, and opines there was corruption and cronyism, rather than just a 9:1 'bias'.

Are the French our natural enemy, asks Jane, or is the entente now nice and cordial? We’ve been invaded, in the past by the French, and we’ve done the same. Perhaps we have realised that we’re all on the same side really? Vive la France, anyway!

Richard tries to explain why successive Conservatives and Labour governments since Margaret Thatcher in 1979, are all the same - Neo-Liberals the lot of em! 'Don't Tell Sid' that!

This weeks Battenberg conversations are started by Jane Gamble and Richard Sara.

Is there more cheating in sports than there was? asks Jane. Every skater can’t be Torville or Dean; nor every footballer Messi. We examine the more outlandish scams, and wonder why anyone would take that risk?

Richard was delayed by an hour before England v Mexico, and discovers that the Aztecs were very strange. Perhaps they were affected by the damp!

Jane went, recently, to a marvellous party. OK. What made it so bloomin’ marvellous? What’s the perfect formula? Jane pops on a fabulous frock and goes forth to investigate….

Brian L Roberts from Philadelphia owns Comcast, who now own Sky Broadcasting, who now own ITV. Will Coronation Street ever be the same again, or will Brian now fund whichever political party in the UK that supports his wealth growing aims? Richard isn't so sure that he is an 'independent'.

The national news has to be taken in small doses, these days, leaving the viewer often feeling helpless. Maybe though, muses Jane, it’s all about your outlook. Perhaps, taking hold of life is a solution?

Sir Isaac Newton's 17th century 'thought experiment' involved placing a cannon on top of a very high mountain. The cannonball is then fired at 17500 mph and never hits the ground. Who would have thunk it? Richard tries to explain.

We are bombarded, daily, by the secrets which will, apparently ensure a long, healthy life. Sometimes, though, the way ahead could be simple and obvious. If you’d like to live to be 100, follow Jane to the Blue Zone…!

The Performance Managers get paid the big bucks to ensure the reviews get reviewed, and the evaluations get evaluated, the justifications are justified. Unfortunately this inevitably means that the deliverers have fewer resources to deliver. Richard reviews and evaluates how we do things in the public sector and can see little justification.
