In 2026, Theatre in the Mill celebrates 50 years of making, experimenting, questioning, and creating in Bradford. For UNTITLED 5, artists are invited to respond to our archive and create new work that connects the past, present, and future. Our archive contains traces of five decades: artists, audiences, performances, projects, photos, programmes, ideas, experiments, successes, failures, and moments that might have disappeared. But an archive is never complete; it reflects what was recorded, kept, whose work was remembered, and whose stories are missing. We want artists to explore that history with curiosity, imagination, and irreverence. What might you discover if you follow a photograph, name, performance, or forgotten idea? What if you revisit a question from decades ago? Whose voices are absent? What has changed in Bradford, theatre, and the world—what feels familiar? We’re not looking for simple commemorations or nostalgia. We want artists to activate the archive: challenge, remix, reinterpret, argue with it, fill gaps, invent, or start something unexpected. Responses can include performance, writing, sound, installation, digital work, participatory practice, or something new. As we approach our 50th anniversary, we also want to look forward. What should our theatre carry into the next fifty years? What should we leave behind? What will someone discover in the archive in 2076? The archive isn’t finished. What will you add? UNTITLED 5 asks you to create new work in conversation with fifty years of Theatre in the Mill—not to commemorate but to activate it. Five artists will be chosen to create work from November to March, with a showcase. Each receives £2,500, plus support for production, technical, storytelling, and facilities at TiM.
