After my first visit to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival during my GCSE year at school, I was totally hooked; it has become the highlight of my year. I never feel more at home as a human being than I do sat as part of a Fringe Festival audience. The anticipation, the nervous energy, the connectivity, the laughter… it really has it all. Every year, without fail, I find a number of shows that explore u
ncharted territory, challenge my perceptions of what theatre is and should be or quite simply am left overwhelmed with an array of complex and wonderful emotions. I’ve laughed hysterically, cried uncontrollably, been totally perplexed by what I’ve just seen, shared something incredible with a group of complete strangers, been enlightened, been challenged, felt totally in awe and been constantly inspired by the incredible array of innovative ideas on show. I would love for more people to have the opportunity to witness these unique theatrical moments, broaden their perceptions and have access to great quality entertainment. These are shows that quite simply you didn’t know you needed to see! What unites each company that Good Idea at the Time seeks to promote is a playful nature, novel presentation, a healthy dose of surrealism, work that is evocative on a number of levels, people who are driven by a desire to be different and shows that provide a guaranteed talking point when you leave the theatre. The companies we work with have poured their heart and soul into these pieces and presented you with an insight into their beautiful brains. The personal touch is evident in every ounce of the presentation and, though at times unashamedly rough and ready, the passion and commitment is always unquestionable and shines through. They succeed despite all of the odds – a tiny space, a competitive market and lack of funding and still throw themselves wholeheartedly into the whole pursuit of a dream. These productions deserve our support because they pave the way for genius ideas. These are the people who dare to dream and we want to help them keep the dream alive! Through the madness there is merriment. Through the madness there is beauty. It’s amazing what can be achieved when you are prepared to rip up the rulebook and trust your instincts.
