Dear Friends,

May I wish you all a very enjoyable (and not too hot) Summer break, and commend one last event for your interest. Tomorrow, Saturday 12th July, the Grange Choral Society of Christchurch, Dorset, are celebrating the resurrection and rebuilding of Notre Dame de Paris in an exciting programme of music by a number of French composers. Widor and Vierne are the composers of the two main works, both settings of the Mass, and they are exciting settings of the Latin Mass for Choir and Two Organs. There are also other more familiar pieces such as the “Cantique de Jean Racine” by Fauré and “Panis Angelicus” by Cesar Franck. There is also organ music by Duruflé and the much-loved Widor Toccata. All in all a stunning menu of music which will lift you out of your seats!

I realise that, for most of you, Christchurch Priory is quite a distance away but I promise you that it will be well worth your while turning up tomorrow evening!

Please see details in the attached poster. Oh, and tickets are also available at the door of the Priory.

Looking forward to seeing some of you tomorrow.

Yours ever,

Christopher Dowie

Saturday 30th November saw Wimborne Choral Society celebrate the end of an era with a wonderful concert in Wimborne Minster.

The sell-out final concert in the 47 year tenure of Christopher Dowie as founder and Musical Director featured choruses from Bach’s B Minor Mass, Chris's own quirky, humorous and moving orchestral tribute to his family, 'Domestic Suite', and concluded with Mozart's Requiem, dedicated to the memory of Michael Dowie (1972-2020). As well as the choir, the concert also featured Wimborne Chamber Orchestra, organist Sam Hanson, and vocal soloists Jaqueline Foan, Catherine Murray, Michael Aitkenhead and Hugh Sutton, all of whom are regular contributors to our concerts.

At the end of the evening, audience and performers alike paid tribute to Chris’s long service to the choir and to music in the town of Wimborne Minster, in particular his special role as founder and long-term leader of Wimborne Choral Society. Floral tributes were offered, a prestigious ‘Fellow of the London College of Music Lifetime Achievement’ award was presented to Chris, and a final musical farewell was played in his honour: Edward Elgar’s ‘Salut d‘Amour’, a piece written by Elgar for his wife, appropriate as we have also expressed our deep thanks to Pauline Dowie for her immense support and contributions over many years.

This concert was also the last under the guidance of our Chair of nearly 20 years, Marion Brown. She has been a wonderful servant to the choir, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. She will be greatly missed as Chair, although we are delighted that she will continue to be an integral part of the choir, continuing as a singer and Librarian.

Wimborne Choral Society is looking forward to the future under the leadership of new Musical Director Colin Davey, but Christopher Dowie’s vision in founding this choir, his musical knowledge and direction at rehearsals and concerts, and above all his humour and friendship will be greatly missed by all.

Saturday 30th November 2024 at 7.30 in Wimborne Minster.

It’s not too late to get tickets for this concert, my last as Conductor of Wimborne Choral Society after 47 years since I founded the choir with a “Come and Join In” Messiah early in 1978.

In addition to the Mozart “Requiem” our programme will include excerpts from Bach’s B minor Mass and the Dowie “Domestic Suite”.

As ever we will be performing with Wimborne Chamber Orchestra and our soloists will be:-
Soprano : Jacqueline Foan
Alto : Catherine Murray
Tenor : Michael Aitkenhead
Bass : Hugh Sutton

Fiona Brockhurst, French Horn, will also feature as soloist in one of the Bach excerpts “Quoniam Tu Solus Sanctus” which is for Baritone, Horn and two Bassoons and in the stunning Handel aria from his opera “Giulio Cesare” - “Va tacito e nascosto” sung by Catherine Murray.

I look forward to welcoming a capacity audience next Saturday. Please come.
