Workshop: football player card making 🎨

Last weekend we were at the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool to delivery a young people’s workshop as part of their annual Schools’ Exhibition, this year titled SQUAD GOALS.

We made personalised football trading cards, working with instant photography, collage, and print making techniques. Participants were asked to think about their body language and pose, choice of colour and border, crest design and what positive character attributes they wanted to highlight. The results were amazing!

Thanks to for having us 💞.

From this weekend until the exhibition closes on 30 March, the artworks in SQUAD GOALS made by local school children have been joined by LS Lowry’s masterpiece ‘Going to the Match’ (1953), as it’s on a year long tour of North Western art venues.

Join us tomorrow for the next Football Reading Group, produced in collaboration with 🗣️📖💕

This time we’ll look at strike action in and around Women’s football, from before the FA's 1921 ban, where the women's game raised money for striking workers, to understanding why so many of Spain's top female footballers have refused to play for their country ahead of the Women's World Cup, and an exploration into the anti-imperialist potential of strikes, looking at the writing of Ariella Aisha Azoulay.

This session is an accompaniment to the Union fundraising tournament happening on the 25th June, hosted by and us!

Our aim for this reading group is for it to be monthly, with the possibility that it is hosted in different locations and led by an evolving group of organisers. At the end of this session we will discuss ways to get involved. If you’d like to be involved with the reading group and help shape the theme for a future session but can’t make it on 3rd July, then please be in touch to let us know.

We are really keen to dive into these subjects together as a community. These sessions are open to everyone, no matter how much of a football fan you are or what your academic background is - all are welcome!

As this session is outdoors, please come prepared with a layer and charged devices, downloaded articles or hotspotting access if you want to look at the materials!

Last but by no means least in the publication line-up is Idle Women with their project, ‘Stadium for the Future’. This project is both a proposal, provocation and occupation of space. Not another concrete monolith, but a stadium to re-imagine environmental recovery and reciprocity, a self-sustaining ecosystem of women's doing, creating, training, playing and manifesting a different world.⠀

Throughout July 2022 invited women to attend four raves specifically developed with and for women who actively make space/fight/advocate for women, to dance the stadium into existence; an acoustic drum and brass rave in a tree-lined clearing in Pennington Flash, a rave for older women at a riverside park in Hounslow with vinyl DJ Texas Ranger, a canal-side rave under a flyover in Campbell Park in Milton Keynes with Q***r Rave Sound System and a tournament finale site on a football pitch in Brent and hosted by community activators, truth keepers, and innovators.⠀

The full Against the Run of Play team came down to the London edition, held at a community pitch just a stone throw away from Wembley on a gorgeous summer’s eve two days before the won the EUROS tournament. As the images attest, it was a special night. First two are courtesy of Jemima Yong.⠀

The second text in the publication is by writer, filmmaker and academic Juliet Jacques.⠀
⠀
Circumstances dictated that Juliet went to see almost all of Germany’s matches during EURO2022, developing an “unpatriotic affection” for this team. She says “stereotype has it that the Germans are organised, efficient - and always beat the people's favourites”. ⠀
⠀
We now know this narrative didn’t quite hold up in the very end (> swipe to relive the final!), but Juliet’s piece explores the history of this and other age-old national rivalries and if they still ring true in the women’s game. ⠀
⠀
To read the text; DM us if you’d like a copy of the publication which we can send to you for £4 P&P or pick-up a copy for free from the in Manchester and in London. ⠀

The centrefold of the Against the Run of Play publication is a drawing courtesy of Hannah Buckmann. Hannah likes making drawings of people moving, which is what we invited her to do by coming along to a game. ⠀

Hannah says that her drawing “combines frantic live sketches she made at the Germany vs. Austria EURO2022 semi-finals match and some slower drawings rewatching the highlights. I wanted to capture the energy of the players and atmosphere of the stadium. Drawing and also trying to follow the game I felt quite chaotic and desperate which I think is reflected in the final work!” ⠀⠀
These images show some details of the final work but it is well worth getting your hands on a copy to see the full piece in print. DM us for more info, we will post one to you for £4 to cover P&P. ⠀

You can follow more of work as Hannah currently illustrates the biweekly column 'Brooding' for .
