We are an arts programme based in Lancashire shaped by the local community working alongside artists.

Funded by the Arts Council England’s Creative People & Places programme, Super Slow Way is a partnership made up of the Canal & River Trust, Newground, local authorities of Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Pendle and Hyndburn and Arts Partnership Pennine Lancashire (APPL). Super Slow Way's mission is to develop an exciting arts programme shaped by local communities in collaboration with local, national and international artists and producers.

Join us for a special half-term celebration on Wednesday 28th October, 11am-2pm in Audley for woodland crafts, creative activities and home-cooked food!

We’ll be joined by The Natural Woodsman and friends at Audley Community Park for woodland crafts, creative and nature based activities, communal eating and conversation.

Enjoy a pay as you feel lunch freshly prepared from Taste of Home collective. 🍲

FREE to join for Blackburn residents. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Participants can park for free in St Paul’s Church carpark. Please note that free parking is NOT available in Jans Conference Centre car park 🅿 ️

We have lots of free activity happening along The Super Slow Way over the next two weeks!

🍁 This Wednesday 21st October, from 11am-2pm you can join Join Super Slow Way, Creatopathy, The Natural Woodsman and friends at Audley Community Park for woodland crafts, creative and nature based activities, communal eating and conversation!

🥚 In the afternoon of Wednesday 21st October, from 4-6pm you can come along to The Exbury Egg as we begin to envision the future of the Egg! We want to hear how you view the Egg, what you value about it, and what you imagine for its new Egg Club.

🥗 Then next Thursday 29th October, 4-6pm you can Join Taste of Transformation, Youth Works in the Kitchen and Mums to Mums for creative activity, music and a monthly communal dining experience in Nelson around our À la Carte table. Together we will further activate our Taste of Transformation manifesto which aims to bring about social and local food economy change, and open up radical conversations on the politics of food, all over a shared meal.

Join us in Audley for woodland crafts, creative activities and home-cooked food, starting next Wednesday 7th October!

We’ll be joined by The Natural Woodsman and friends at Audley Community Park for woodland crafts, creative and nature based activities, communal eating and conversation.

Enjoy a Jacobs Join lunch, bring along something to share if you wish or enjoy a brew and some local snacks.

Sessions will run from 11am-2pm on alternating weeks and are FREE to join for Blackburn residents. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

We have lots of free activity happening along The Super Slow Way next week!

🌱 On Tuesday 22nd September, 1-3pm you can join artist Ian Halawi in Blackburn for our first autumnal wild walk, where we’ll be exploring the blue and green spaces along the Leeds Liverpool Canal. We’ll identify and map what you see, from heritage buildings to wildlife, factories to flora and hear your stories about what the linear landscape means to you.

🥚 On Wednesday 23rd September, 4-6pm you can come along to our Autumn Equinox at Stephen Turner’s Exbury Egg, to plant spring bulbs in the solstice garden and share conversation and food around the fire pit. Stephen will host a conversation around the role of community action groups and clubs, and we welcome anyone interested in helping develop an ‘Egg Club’ to attend. This will be a Jacob’s join event; please bring food of your choice to share with others if you are able!

We’re very pleased to welcome artists Jayne Lawless and Studio INSTAR to the Super Slow Way as our artists in residence over the next year.

Chosen by a community panel of residents from Nelson, Burnley and Clayton-le-Moors, the artists will work with communities to nurture connections between them and the natural world found along the canal corridor.

INSTAR is a multidisciplinary studio run by artists Trish Evans and Nick Humphreys. Through site-responsive contemporary artworks and collaborations, they explore the intricate connections between people, place and the more-than-human world. Drawing on their lifelong engagement with nature, their work invites curiosity, connection and a deeper sense of environmental belonging.

Jayne Lawless is an artist based in Liverpool. Jayne believes art belongs to everyone, not just the elite and aims to break barriers, inspire creativity and encourage others to follow their own creative paths in her roaming projects, such as Dead Pigeon Gallery and North End Sketch Club. Jayne sees the artist’s role extending beyond the gallery to activism, influencing change in social and environmental policy.

A research project in conjunction with Lancaster University are hosting a a participatory research project for young women age 16-18, exploring connections between the persecution of the Pendle witches and the lives of people in Pendle today.

Who were ‘witches’? How has their story been told? What was happening to women, communities and land at the time of witch trials? And what does this history mean to our lives?

We are looking for Blackburn residents who can share their experiences and views on the role mills played in building relationships with those born in the town and early Asian
migrants to the town. Whether you worked in a mill, grew up close to one or had a family member with personal experience of working alongside the communities who moved to Blackburn to support its once thriving cotton industry.

Conversations, experiences and stories will form part of our new project ‘The Town that Makes Us’ in which writer, playwright and performer, Avaes Mohammad, returns to his native Blackburn to reconnect with his hometown after almost 30 years.

It was great to get back on the water with Sporting NRG on Saturday 🛶

Using our pontoon at Audley Community Park, we had lots of participants canoeing on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, many of whom hadn’t canoed before!
