The first day of Hanukkah
By the sea, candles burning bright
My family’s here, my friends are close
Everything just feels so right.

At Bondi, the community laugh together
Our feet all buried in the sand
The sun is warm and cosy
I have an ice cream in my hand.

Daddy throws my brother into the air
Mummy, she laughs out loud
And just when everything is perfect
A big bang comes from the crowd

The music stops, the sea turns quiet
My little ears, oh how they hurt
Why is everyone running away?
Why is there red on that man’s shirt?

Daddy said today there wouldn’t be fireworks
He said that today is a day of peace
Where did all the happy people go?
Why is the beach surrounded by police?

While I cannot find my family
A lady pushes me to the ground
I’m starting to feel scared now
I don’t like that awful banging sound.

Why is the lady squishing me?
Her body covering mine
Somehow I feel safe beneath her
She says everything will be just fine.

I don’t understand what’s happening
I don’t know what I should do
I just want my family back
And the day I thought I knew.

The nice lady keeps whispering in my ear
Her voice is soft and warm
She reminds me everything will be okay
A lump in her throat begins to form.

I ask her, “can we hide?”
She says, “of course baby, we can”
Now I know where that sound is coming from
Over there - it’s that man.

He’s holding a big long gun
And he just looked over this way
I feel a tear drip upon my head
I ask the nice lady if we should pray.

I count to ten inside my head
While my body trembles with fear
The kind lady covers my little ears
So I no longer have to hear.

Together we lay so still
The minutes feel so very long
I feel her heartbeat in my chest
Like part of a gentle song.

I didn’t know her name at all
She didn’t know mine too
But she kept me safe tonight
Just like family would do.

And there were lots of people like her
Who stayed and didn’t flee
Most people chose to be brave and kind
The way the world should be.

Today I learnt something important
Though it was so very hard and true
That most people are full of kindness
Even when disaster breaks through.

Dear Santa

I’m writing you this letter
Because today’s December first
I know I’m not the best boy
But I don’t think I’m the worst.

I always turn on my listening ears
And I promise I’m never mean
Last year I was good all year long
But you must not have seen.

Because you never came to my house
I really thought you would
I tried my hardest every single day
To be extra special good.

I woke up super early
To see if you had been
Why didn’t you come, Santa?
Is it because our house isn’t clean?

Sometimes it smells funny in our house
I’ll help my Mummy to clean up
I don’t think we have any milk
So I’ll leave a can for you to sup.

Mummy’s boyfriend has lots of cans
And he has a big tummy just like you
When I told him about your letter
He told me that Santa isn’t true.

It’s okay though, Santa
I don’t want lots and lots and lots
Just a small present is enough
Maybe a new pair of socks.

And pretty pretty please
Could I have just one more thing…
A cuddly unicorn for my little sister
One of them ones that can sing.

Last week she lost her favourite teddy
So every day she’s been so sad
We don’t want anything fancy
Not a bike or an iPad.

Charlie and Oscar have an elf at home
He got delivered in a box
He does lots of silly things
He even poured cereal in their blocks!

Some children went on the bus today
While we were doing circle time
They got special tickets to see
A Christmas pantomime.

All my friends wore Christmas jumpers
But Mummy doesn’t have pennies for that
And when we played outside
Mrs Blake let me borrow a spare hat.

Mrs Blake bought me a chocolate calendar
She said it’s specially for me
She lets me open every door
But not to let the other children see.

She says I’m such a good boy
She says I’ve got a heart of gold
I heard her say to Mr Jacobs
That she worries about me being cold.

So I really hope you’ll come this year
Please don’t forget about me
You can put my present under the stairs
Cos we don’t have a Christmas tree.

I love you so much Santa
I hope you get this letter
And don’t forget my little sister
I told you what to get her.

Love from Ben, age 5 x

A Life Without Garlic

A life without garlic,
A miserable life indeed.
Without its epic infusion,
A pitiful, flavourless feed.

A curry without it?
What a culinary crime!
A garlic-absent dish
A total waste of time.

What good is time spent
Spent stirring at the stove?
Oh, what a dire dish
A meal without the clove.

A life without flavour,
Without bite, without s***k.
Imagine a kebab
Without garlic sauce, half-drunk?

It doesn’t bear thinking about,
The root of all flavour.
The king of the bulbs,
Its essence we savour.

Roasted or crushed,
As aromatic as always,
In just about any culture,
It’s bound to amaze.

From Beijing to Bangkok,
From Kashmir to Crete,
Without that flavour bomb,
No cuisine is complete.

From spicy and pungent
To mellow and sweet,
The true king of the bulbs
Compliments any meat.

A stir-fry, a steak,
A soup or a stew,
Without garlic’s magic,
What would we do?

Oh clove of glory,
Bulb of delight,
It attacks vampires by the dozen,
And keeps cholesterol in sight.

Full of antiseptic properties,
Anciently used to fight the Black Death,
Garlic’s one tiny downfall—
It leaves you with God-awful breath.

This is my ode to thee, garlic,
Your aroma never goes amiss.
Your exquisitely unique fragrance,
The ultimate chef’s kiss.

Today’s newsfeed

Today while on my lunch break
On TikTok I was scrolling through
Don’t you just love the algorithm
Recommended videos “for you”

A couple of messy Mukbangs
Oh yes they’re right up my street
How many McDonald’s Big Macs
can one single person eat?

A quick get ready with me
Or even just a shopping haul
Each episode of Jess and Norma
For sure I’ve watched them all.

Hashtag dog lovers of TikTok
Of course my number one most viewed
A wholesome reunion video
Guaranteed to lighten my mood.

But one thing that’s not “for me”
Seeing innocent people take their last breath
What has happened to the world?
When did we become to desensitised to death?

Fleeing war-stricken Ukraine
To live a safe and humble life
Little did she know
Soon she’d be savaged with a knife.

And her last moments will go viral
Just a scroll within your day
Watching the life pour out of her
Your entertainment for the day.

But we’ll scroll on like it never happened
Because that’s society today
And we’ll keep on witnessing graphic content
Much to our dismay.

Simply browsing through my news feed
Just casually flicking past
Oh look it’s Charlie Kirk!
And then it all happened so fast.

What was that loud noise?
Everyone’s panicking - What the heck
While his young daughter is in the audience
Blood is spirting from his neck.

Just for voicing his beliefs
Another life so mercilessly taken
And the footage so easily viewed
When will the world awaken?

Some things should be left in private
Give the victims the respect that they deserve
Iryna Zarutska and Charlie Kirk
Their memories we should preserve.
