Have you tried laced back stitch? It's a lovely way to add a bit of extra detail and colour to a simple row of back stitch, and it's really easy to do!

Here's how:

1. Start with a neat row of back stitch along your line.
2. Thread your needle with a second colour and bring it up at the start of the row.
3. Slide your needle under each back stitch in turn, weaving the second thread along the line without going through the fabric.
4. Keep the thread fairly loose so it sits neatly around the stitches without pulling the fabric.
5. At the end, take your needle through to the back and secure your thread.

My tip is to use the blunt end of your needle for the lacing, or a tapestry needle if you have one. It's much easier to avoid catching the fabric or splitting your stitches.

It's a fun little stitch to experiment with, especially if you try using two contrasting colours!

🎄 Come and stitch along with me this Christmas!

This December I'm running a Christmas Embroidery Stitch-Along, and I'd love you to join in!

I've designed a special Advent Calendar Embroidery Kit with 24 little Christmas designs, one to stitch each day from 1st to 24th December.

There are gingerbread houses, Christmas puddings, baubles, a little robin and lots more, all stitched in lovely festive colours with a bit of gold sparkle! ✨

I'll be sharing videos, tips and close-ups throughout December to help you with each design, so it's a lovely project to try even if you're fairly new to embroidery.

Each little design takes around 10–20 minutes, and there's absolutely no pressure to keep up. Stitch along each day, catch up at the weekend or just enjoy it whenever you have time.

By Christmas Eve you'll have a finished embroidery hoop to bring out year after year, and hopefully a new Christmas tradition too!

If you fancy joining in, I've tagged the Advent Calendar Embroidery Kit in the photo so you can have a closer look and find out what's included. 🧵

I hope you'll come and stitch with me! ❤️

If you're looking for a quick embroidery project, here's something that's always fun!

I recently used my personalised name transfers to stitch a little gift bag for a very special girl to keep her sea creatures in. It only took about 10 minutes, but adding a name can make even a simple gift feel a bit more special.

There are lots of things you can personalise with a bit of embroidery. Christmas stockings, little gift bags, make-up pouches, decorations, napkins... once you start looking, there are quite a few possibilities!

You can use iron-on transfers for things like cotton and linen, or stick-and-stitch patterns for projects that are a bit trickier to iron. Both are easy to use, even if you're fairly new to embroidery.

I think it's a lovely way to make something a bit more personal, without having to spend hours stitching it.

I sent an email to my newsletter this week about finding time for hobbies and craft projects when life gets busy. It got me thinking about some of the simple things that make it easier to keep going with a project, even when you don't have much spare time.

One of the things I love about hand embroidery is that you don't need to set aside a whole afternoon to enjoy it. Even 15 or 20 minutes is enough to make a bit of progress.

I find it helps to keep a project ready to pick up, with the hoop, threads, scissors and needle all together. That way there's no hunting around for everything when you finally get a chance to sit down!

And don't feel you have to finish something in one go. Some of my projects get worked on in little bits over several weeks.

Do you manage to find time for crafting at the weekend, or are you more of an evening stitcher?

One Christmas napkin finished, five more to go!

I'm really pleased with how this has turned out. The little gold stars add just enough sparkle, and I think the embroidered initial makes it feel a bit special without being too complicated to stitch.

It's a nice manageable project, with just a few simple stitches, and I love the idea of bringing them out each Christmas.

Now I just need to get on with the rest!

How cool is this little thing? It’s a thread cutting ring.

You wear it on your finger and pull the thread into the hidden cutter underneath the heart to snip it. It’s especially handy when you’ve already got a hoop in one hand and don’t want to keep putting everything down to find the scissors.

Completely unnecessary until you’ve used one for five minutes and then suddenly very useful!

This is what I'm stitching at the moment! I'm making a set of personalised napkins for our Christmas table, with little embroidered initials, greenery and a few gold stars.

I've kept the design quite simple, as I've got six to make and don't want to spend weeks stitching them!

I've made my own iron ons for these, which make it really easy to get the design in the right place on the fabric. If they turn out well I'll be adding the pattern set to my site in case you would like to have a go!

I'll share the finished one in a couple of days. Hopefully the others won't take too long!

Needle minders are one of those tiny sewing things that make much more sense once you’ve used one.

There are two magnets: one sits behind your fabric and the decorative one sits on the front. When you pause, your needle just sticks to it instead of disappearing into the sofa, your sleeve or somewhere on the floor...

They work for embroidery and cross stitch, and this glitter heart is one of mine. Small thing, surprisingly useful.

October stitching without committing to a whole Halloween project!

These little iron-on designs have pumpkins, ravens, witchy bits and lettering, so you can pick one small motif for a tote bag, napkin, little hoop or whatever needs a bit of Halloween.

Iron-on transfers are nice for quick projects because there’s no tracing first. Press the design onto light-coloured fabric with a hot dry iron, then stitch straight over the lines. I think the pumpkin would be my first pick.
