May 22nd is the opening night for degree show. It’s a fun night to celebrate with the final year students, see their work and check out any upcoming stars of the future. Wandering round all the studios seeing all the fresh work and ideas is so much fun and highly recommended. If you can’t make it on Friday night, 22nd May, then access continues for the following week.

Here’s a fantastic painting from the brilliant as a great example of the amazing amount of burgeoning talent and creativity a degree show can offer.

is serious about building a painting career and getting his work presented professionally is part of that.

Viewing and excellent talk this evening by Fred Wyrley-Birch at for the sale of the late Brian Whitton’s incredible collection of the works of John Tunnard.
Viewing of this first phase of the collection is tomorrow morning and includes some incredibly important works relevant to the history of C.20th British art. Some spectacular pieces have been given to the Tate Gallery but Brian’s collection was the largest in the world so there is an excellent exhibition here worth seeing.

We worked with Brian Whitton for decades: he was an avid collector and supporter of contemporary artists as well as being an expert on John Tunnard and he understood the value of conservation and the protection offered to artworks by the correct framing environment.

Brian was an Emeritus Professor in Botany at , his main research work was on river systems and algae. He was such an interesting man and the works shown here are just some of the frames we made for his Tunnards in the current auction which can be viewed online on the Anderson & Garland website.

This week we are mostly obsessing about brutalism and concrete buildings. We’ve always been fans of mid C.20th architecture and our past view from the Newcastle premises was the fantastic Civic Centre, but we’ve been sparked into it a side quest to notice more locally, especially in Washington and Birtley. All because of this painting and looking at further work by
Anyway, just to say we are also pleased George chose this wenge tray frame, it’s bold with a slight nod to a mid century feel.

There are still lovely frames available for older paintings, a classic gilt frame is entirely in keeping with this C.19th oil on canvas. It has a soft, unbrassy finish and is wood so it will last well and age nicely. Some of the composition mouldings available now have the wrong feel and become brittle and fall apart, so we feel this level of quality is entirely worth it.

Just a plain white edge showing the whole canvas.
It’s a lovely, gentle contemplative work but the title ‘The Monkey on my Back’ leads you in to consider the inner strength we all need to hold ourselves up. It’s a piece for February, when we’ve all had enough and light is coming.

Today marks the start of an exhibition honouring Tom McGuiness at the Mining Art Gallery, Bishop Auckland. A century after his birth, this is a major retrospective documenting his life inside and outside 39 years of mining life.
Tom was sent underground as a Bevan Boy in 1944, a part of the Spennymoor Settlement community and a contemporary of Norman Cornish, he studied art at Darlington School of Art, but was largely self taught since, like Cornish he painted when day work was finished.
Tom’s style was entirely his own, developed through his extensive knowledge of art history and 20th century Modern British painters, creating a muted colour range and stylised shapes to convey the claustrophobia and darkness of working underground. He died in 2006, aged 79.

These two fine canvases needed frames for the exhibition. “Out of the Darkness” runs until December.

A refresh for an old painting. A light flash of varnish to reinvigorate the oil colours that have sunk and a smarter frame to enrich the composition and let the light in. Swipe to see the canvas before.
