We live in the centre of Neolithic Orkney which is a constant inspiration with its beautiful landscapes, big skies, frothing seas and majestic lochs. After a 5 year sabbatical, building our house, Michael has returned to his love of Woodturning. A self-taught wood turner with over 25 years’ experience, with an eye for the potential of natural wood he has developed a skill to enhance its natural fo

rm, shaping the pieces using the lathe and hand carving. These skills and techniques allow him to obtain the desired result, quality and finish for each piece. He also uses exotic timbers, leather and silver to embellish pieces. The nature of the timber results in a wide variety of pieces, shape, size and individuality.

Removing the decorative plug from a wooden bowling ball. Once I’d retrieved it from the shavings you can see they are quite interesting wee things

Final buff with the wax wheel. This sycamore blank was stored in the water bin with oak blanks. I think the oak tannin is the cause of the staining you see in the finished piece. Gives it an aged look
