We’re continuing our Black History Month spotlight series, celebrating the voices and experiences of the team. This week, Joe and Tracey are sharing what Black History Month means to them:

What does Black History Month mean to you?
For Joe, Black History Month’s focus on culture is what makes it so meaningful. It highlights the huge influence of Black culture and the Black diaspora, which has shaped many aspects of British life and identity. Joe values the opportunity to celebrate the many ways Black Britishness has contributed to Britain today.

For Tracey, Black History Month feels very special because it’s something she did not experience growing up. She believes celebrating the positive impact of Black people, communities and cultures in Britain is both fascinating and an important lesson for younger generations. As she says, it’s important to know where you have been to know where you are going.

What's your favourite work by a Black artist or creative, and why?
Joe’s favourite play is For Black Boys Who Have Considered Su***de When The Hue Gets Too Heavy. He was particularly drawn to the cast’s powerful, surreal performances and the way they portrayed the characters’ experiences. Joe feels the play stands out because it authentically centres Black voices and lived experiences, which is why it holds a special place in his heart.

As an avid reader, Tracey’s favourite work of Black art is Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. She has treasured her copy since 1988 and admires Butler’s ability to explore real societal issues through science fiction. Tracey loves how Butler helped establish sci-fi as a powerful form of social commentary.

Which Black History Month event in Birmingham (or elsewhere) are you looking forward to most?
Although it did not take place this year, Joe always looks forward to Black Pride in London. He enjoys seeing his communities come together and celebrating in an open and welcoming space.

Tracey does not have one specific event she is most excited about because she enjoys them all. She is proud of the wide range of events taking place across Britain to celebrate such an important month.
