This render is actually of our own office.

Like many creative spaces, it’s gone through a few different versions over the years as the business has grown and evolved. As we started spending more time developing digital designs for commercial studios and education spaces, it made sense to turn that thinking inward and apply the same tools to our own environment.

Using digital design allowed us to step back and properly consider how we work day to day, from the available layout and acoustics to monitoring, workflow and our comfort working here, before committing to physical changes.

It’s been a useful reminder that the same design principles apply whether a space is for teaching, research, production or simply getting good work done!

Not every part of a project is glamorous but it all matters! These shots were taken during a recent cabling job at the University of Birmingham, an institution we’re very fortunate to work with regularly.

Whilst close-ups of connectors and cables don’t steal the spotlight very regularly, there’s definitely a sense of accomplishment going from tangled cabling to a properly structured system. This work formed a small part of a much wider installation supporting studio upgrades and ongoing spatial audio research.

Sometimes progress looks less like a finished room and more like well-labelled cables and tidy terminations but it’s no less important!

This photo was taken back when Giraffe Audio was based at the Big Peg in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

At that point, the vast majority of our work centred around sourcing and supplying the right equipment for people. We were very much grounded in retail at the time.

Although our product knowledge still shapes a large part of what we do today. Over time, our work has grown beyond equipment alone into the design, construction and renovation of complete creative spaces. We’re now as involved in how a room is planned, built and treated as we are in what goes into it.

It's definitely been a rollercoaster over the last 10+ years but ultimately very fulfilling when we are able to listen closely to how people actually want to use their spaces, and then bring that to reality with our designs.

This is a render from the early stages of an education space we had been putting together. It's an important step in our process as it gives us a basis to think properly about how the room will work, feel and perform before anything is built.

Our experience has taught us that a well-designed education space does more than house a bunch of equipment but actually plays an active role in the teaching and learning that goes on within it.

That's why when we design a new space the audio, visuals, lighting and acoustics are all brought together as part of a cohesive design so that the environment we create can support different teaching styles, reduce distractions and the need for troubleshooting, and ultimately help students stay focused and comfortable.

Many of our followers will know that the creative sector has always been at the heart of what we do as it’s where our foundations are and why spending time in studios and production spaces is still very important to us.

The added bonus is that getting out for a proper listen and a catch up means we get to see how new rooms are actually being used, what issues people are finding in their workflow and this helps to keep our work practical and relevant.

Balancing office work with time on site is an important part of how we approach build projects.

Time in the office spent planning and coordinating allows us to work more efficiently on site, and being hands-on during the project feeds back into more realistic and productive design decisions. We've found that relationship brings a level of consistency and continuity to our builds that’s hard to deliver any other way.

Here's Nick on site finishing off the final stages of a fabric job and neatly hiding away the acoustic material installed at an earlier stage.

Sharing some new digital designs for a very smart multi-channel space 🔊

Whether it's for music, post-production, education or experiential projects, we’re seeing a growing shift towards spaces that can, or need to, support immersive audio formats. It might not be that clients are installing full immersive systems on day one but they are certainly planning for them.

For us, considering speaker locations, acoustics, infrastructure and the associated workflows from the outset means we can design with multi-channel in mind and plan for a room to evolve down the line.

As the year draws to a close, we’d like to wish our friends, family and followers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

2025 has been another busy and rewarding year of designing and building spaces that sound, look and feel right. A huge thank you to our team for their skill, care and attention to detail, and to our clients for trusting us with their spaces and ideas.

We hope the festive break brings you some well-earned downtime, and we’re looking forward to getting back to it in the New Year.

You’ll have seen a few snippets recently from our work at the new Saint Paul's Market, just round the corner from us here in the Jewellery Quarter.

We’ve now brought everything together into a short case study on our website. It covers how we collaborated with a number of trades and businesses to shape the sound system for the space, and how we approached the acoustic and technical considerations before installing a series of Wharfedale Pro GPL series loudspeakers and DSP-driven amplifiers across the venue.
