Hi folks. Yes, I am still breathing, sorry. Not for involuntary breathing, but for not breathing any life into my poetry blog. And for any of you hoping – ouch, hope: it will make sense, I promise …

In Those Forgotten Places

soon they will call from those fluid pastures sprung up along untamed aisles that remind us of times we laid down in windless places unseen by the blare of high noon spaces well-trodden haunts cricket’s creases in those forgotten places where ragwort still grows nobody notes anything few know what happens here the suits own everything now the old vacant farmhouse’s windows hide glances no one mows weeds along these tracks nor repairs the cracks near the woodpiles and haystacks where wagons rust in the soaring sedge by the railway tracks in those forgotten places no one knows who drafted the paper map or if it shapes the chosen way

as we roam among the shadows hand-hewn joists below our feet start to creak and splay like old bones that awaken from a troubled slumber those rafters with that same timbre call back they leave footprints to follow patent traces of walks together in low timbered places where we would wander slender tracks and glimpse our faces reflected in pools where leaves tremble they call once more whispered names amid the mesh of vagrant light deferred amber moments in those pastoral places what the earth discerned of misplaced embraces what we meet there lingers like echoes of rumoured secrets borne on the breeze

Dear Poetree Entrant,

After spending the winter planting the 65 trees in The Zephaniah Forest - the last of which are due to be planted February 13th 10:30am - our three judges have finalised their shortlists and the winners for the competition have been decided.

We are pleased to inform you that your submission towards the Trees Please, Poetry Please? Competition has been successful, and one or more of your submitted entries have been chosen to represent the trees in Burbury Park, for The Zephaniah Forest, dedicated to the life and legacy of Benjamin Zephaniah.

We want to thank you for your participation and beautiful poetry. The poems will be paired with a specific tree and printed to add to the trees in the park, as well as being documented on the website, and creating a Poetree Trail for the forest using TreePlotter.

BTP are hoping to plan a small gathering in the next couple of months, to see your allocated trees, tie on the laminated poems, and read the wonderful words in the presence of other creatives in memory of Benjamin.

Please reply to this email individually to find out what entry made it (if you submitted more than one, as this is a mass email), and we hope you have a great week knowing that your poems will be gracing Newtown/Lozells as part of this legacy project with the Benjamin Zephaniah Family Legacy Group.
