Please Share - Spectra Seeks 2 x Artist-Maker-Builders and a Production Manager

Spectra are very excited and grateful to be recruiting once again. Huge thanks in advance if you're able to share the following with your networks (info is also on our social media if sharing there is easier). Please note short turnaround on the first opportunity!

All three roles are for our Abundance project: a natural, wild, all ages, inclusive play-space on the site of the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital. Through this project, we will be working with the Birmingham 2022 Festival, a six-month celebration of creativity across the region and part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

- 2 x Artist-Maker-Builders to work with us and the communities we engage with to collaborate, design and build the Abundance installation. Our Builder-Maker-Artists will join a warm and passionate team including four Spectra artists (a neurodiverse group of collaborators), a Lead Designer, an Artist-Grower, and a Director (as well as a Production Team). This Company will work together to dream, design and build Abundance with input from the beautifully diverse community surrounding our site at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital through thoughtfully planned and delivered co-creation opportunities. Deadline 12pm, Thursday 13 Jan 2022. Full description and application details at Artist-Maker-Builders.

- Production Manager to help us realise our vision for Abundance, working closely with our Producer, Lead Designer and Director. We are looking for someone with experience managing the production of outdoor events in unusual locations that include substantial building work and, ideally, planting too. Deadline 12pm, Monday 24 Jan 2022. Full description and application details at Production Manager.

Our Performance Company is neurointensive and we are dedicated to using our work to cultivate a world that celebrates difference in all its wonderful forms. We take the same approach to curating the pool of freelancers we work with, seeking to be actively inclusive and shift imbalanced representation within our sector by warmly welcoming and prioritising applications from Black and Brown practitioners and those who identify as working class, D/deaf, Disabled and or LGBTQI+.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with Kate DeRight - Creative Director at Spectra if you have any queries.

We call for Birmingham City Council to openly and meaningfully engage with Reservoir users about developments on and around Edgbaston Reservoir.

To date, Birmingham City Council has engaged in tokenistic β€˜consultation’ with Reservoir stakeholders and decisions about the Reservoir’s future are being made without the community’s genuine involvement. Some decisions being made risk the reservoir’s future as a Local Nature Reserve which is open and available to all. Thousands of new homes being built in the area will rely on the Reservoir for their green space. You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. We call on Birmingham City Council to enter into an open, transparent collaboration with Reservoir users by:

– asking unbiased questions about the future of the whole Tower Ballroom site.

– recognising what reservoir users are saying in its future actions.

– co-designing workshops to democratically shape a long term future for the whole Tower Ballroom site.

– revaluing the Reservoir in well-being terms rather than financial terms.

Why is this important?

Signing this petition will help guide us Reservoir users towards shaping the future of Edgbaston Reservoir that WE want and take a stand against BCC’s tokenistic consultation processes.

The Reservoir is a Local Nature Reserve loved by its users, and should be valued in terms of its huge contribution to our well-being, not something which can be repeatedly cited by the council for financial exploitation by developers.

Together, we can look after and shape our reservoir. You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.

Edgbaston Arts Forum and Artscoop Central are actively supporting ERCO in its campaign to keep Edgbaston Reservoir free and open for public benefit.
The Council’s plans for developing the surrounding areas serious threaten this immensely valuable semi-wild open space. This is to let you know that there will be a public meeting this Thursday 2nd December to share lots of information about the council's plans for Edgbaston Reservoir. There has been some particularly surprising news we've received over the last couple of days which we think the public ought to know about.

You can sign up for free here (or just search 'Edgbaston Reservoir' on the Event Brite website):

We hope to see you on Thursday.

Best wishes

Scott

To celebrate the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, six Sandwell schools are working collaboratively in partnership with six Jamaican schools on a project that explores
and celebrates the connections and links between our two Commonwealth countries.

The Sandwell cluster of schools are Harvills Hawthorn Primary, St John Bosco Primary, Wood Green Academy, Moorlands Primary School, Causeway Green Primary School and the Phoenix
Collegiate.

For our project we are seeking to commission a dance artist/producer or dance organisation to work with our schools to create and produce a final dance performance which tells the
story of a passenger’s journey from Jamaica to the UK on the Empire Windrush – beginning with life in Jamaica, the preparations for the journey, the journey and the arrival in the UK.

We envisage this dance performance to be delivered in different parts by each school, and for the performance to also include other responses from the schools should they wish to contribute, for example, performance poetry, short playlets, visual art back projections, costumes, songs and musical responses.
The role of the dance artist/producer or dance organisation would begin in the Spring term from January 2022 and would include:

β€’ Developing a storyline structure for the dance and other performances to follow.

β€’ Working with selected cohorts of pupils from each of the six schools to create and perform a creative dance performance that responds to, and that follows the storyline.

β€’ Act as overall producer to bring together the other artistic responses within the show from the schools, with the dance performance, and to liaise with contributing teachers.

β€’ In partnership with teachers, work towards and manage a final performance at a venue tbc on or around June 22nd (Windrush Day)

Successful applicants will be accomplished in their professional practice and clearly be able to demonstrate successful projects within formal education.
The total commission is for Β£5000 (to include travel) at a daily rate of Β£200 per day. This equates to 4 x days with each of the six schools, a half day to attend planning meetings in January (at least 1 meeting in person with all schools attending) and a further half day for the event itself. To be considered, applicants must hold an Enhanced DBS Certificate (with barring) or be willing to undergo a new check at their own cost on appointment (approx. Β£50).

If you are interested in applying, please email your CV, 1 or 2 images (max size 1MB) and a paragraph that clearly outlines your skills and your response the brief, to:
