Give an old chair a new lease of life ✨🪑

Got a tired old chair gathering dust? Give it a glow-up!

Join us for Upcycle Your Chair Weekender – a two-day creative course where you’ll learn how to transform a pre-loved wooden chair or stool into a statement piece for your home.

From paint, stencils and decoupage to gold leaf, embellishment and fringing, you’ll try out a whole host of techniques and take inspiration from the wonderfully decorative world of Fornasetti and beyond.

Led by interior stylist and crafting enthusiast Masie, you’ll spend the weekend experimenting, creating and giving new life to something unloved – with the aim of leaving with your very own upcycled chair to show off at home. ♻️✨

Inspired by Michael Pinsky: The Final Bid, this is sustainable interior design with a creative twist.

🪑 Chair Spotlight: Skateboard Chair

While holidaying in Wales, Craig came across some old skateboard decks left on the pavement. Not quite sure what to do with them, inspiration struck when he found some broken chairs at work with metal frames.

Passionate about upcycling, Craig began transforming the discarded skateboards into “aesthetically pleasing yet functional” chairs. What started as a creative project became something more meaningful, providing comfort and purpose during a difficult period in his mental health.

A beautiful example of how creativity can give old objects a new life, this chair is now part of The Final Bid by Michael Pinsky.

Visit the exhibition to discover the stories behind the chairs and place your own bid. Every bid raises a chair higher into the gallery, creating a constantly changing sculpture while giving each piece the chance to begin a new chapter.

🪑 The Final Bid
📅 Open daily until Sun 4 October, 11am–5pm
🎟️ Free entry, donations welcome

The Final Bid was commissioned by the Draiflessen Collection, Germany. It is the first time this installation will be shown in the UK.

Kindly supported by players of the Postcode Lottery and Arts Council England.

Sustainability isn't just a side note for us. It's part of everything we do here at MAC.

Over the past few years, we've made real changes to how we run our building and shape our arts programme, all with the planet in mind. Here's a look at what we've been up to:

1. In 2025/26 we recorded our lowest carbon footprint yet 👣
2. Sustainability is embedded in the arts programme 🎨
3. We have solar panels installed on the roof ☀️
4. KILN uses sustainable alternatives 🍕
5. Big Green Weekender is back for the third year 💚
6. We are monitoring the air quality around MAC 🌳

We know there's always more to do, and we'll keep reviewing, adapting and looking for new ways to improve. We'd love to hear any suggestions you have for us - drop them in the comments below.

Making room for imagination with Postcode Lottery.

At MAC, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the incredible summer we’ve had, putting on affordable, accessible exhibitions, performances and film for our local communities.

The magic doesn't stop there. Thanks to the incredible Postcode Lottery players, MAC is here all year round to connect people with creativity.

With support from Postcode Lottery players, MAC can make more room for imagination, curiosity and connection - creating moments where children proudly share what they have made, families discover something new together and people of all ages feel welcome to take part.

From free exhibitions and creative workshops to festivals, learning programmes, live events and community projects, this support helps MAC open up more opportunities for people across Birmingham to experience the joy of arts and culture.

We're forever grateful to Postcode Lottery players for helping make these moments possible.
