A few weeks ago we were saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Moore. Jim was a school caretaker in Much Wenlock, Shropshire for many years, as well as a tireless fundraising marathon-runner. We interviewed him back in 2023 for Echoes of the Soil, Brian Harley’s film about the making of Powell and Pressburger’s Gone to Earth.

Jim had been evacuated to Shropshire from the Liverpool docks in 1941, and he told us how this realm of timbered cottages and apple orchards felt like another planet. His family moved to Wenlock permanently after the war, and in 1949 a glamorous Technicolor film shoot arrived in town. As Jim tells it in the film, he and his friend were climbing on the roof of the Memorial Hall on the night of the local auditions when ‘the man himself’ - director Michael Powell - called them down and recruited them as extras. (Pictured: Jim and friend in their ‘street urchin’ costumes.)

The film includes more tales of Jim’s exploits including his encounter with the film’s star Jennifer Jones. As part of the project we were able to screen Gone to Earth back in Wenlock over seventy years after its production, with a number of locals sharing their memories of the summer when Hollywood came to their high street.

It was a huge privilege getting to hear those stories, and a delight to spend time with Jim. Sending love to his family and friends.

During this year’s festival we saw Kings Heath's • nook • gallery transformed back into the short-lived Cosy Cinema (it existed from 1911 - 1915 before being swept away by its competitors).

Thanks to some tireless digging by Ben Waddington (Still Walking), we have some idea of the people who ran the Cosy - including the ‘Prince of Publicists’ Lawson E. Trout - as well as the films that showed there.

Hear more about Ben’s digging into the cinema’s history via the Birmingham History podcast (episode 4). And stay tuned for more Cosy Cinema screenings at •nook• gallery, from world cinema and documentaries to work by local filmmakers.

💫 Flatpack Festival - no.1 V no.20 💫

Last month we celebrated the 20th edition of Flatpack Festival. We’ve grown a lot since that first fest back in 2006. Still the things that make up the heart and soul of Flatpack remain pretty much the same…

📽️ Celebrating film - in every possible sense of the word
📍Showcasing the Midlands - uncovering untold stories and nurturing local creativity
🤝Bringing people together - creating collective experiences, from the magical to the mind-altering

A warm welcome to anyone who came to their first Flatpack this year. And to those that have stuck around for two whole decades - we couldn’t have done it without you.

Here’s to the next 20!

💫 Victoria Wood appreciation post 💫

First weekend of Flatpack complete - and what a weekend it was. The highlights are many, but we wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make our Victoria Wood programme happen.

Victoria Wood was one of the UK’s finest and most influential comedians and the lovely feedback we’ve had from lifelong fans following the weekend’s event is testament to the impact she had.

Huge thanks to our bus driver Ashley, Jasper Rees, Jane Wymark, Rachel Baker, Janice Connolly (aka Barbara Nice) and our programme partners National Express West Midlands and Calthorpe Estates (Edgbaston Village).

And, big thanks to everyone who came along.

Plenty of Flatpack still to go - get involved 🎟
