True Form Projects are proud to present in the first of a number of live sessions in different places in and around Birmingham. As all our venues are shut down and places to be are dwindling we bring you a selection some of the people we think are making great work.

‘After five years working together as a touring band - including appearances at We Out Here, Great Escape, Wilderness and the Jazz Café - ‘the cruellest month’ marks bonds first creative venture as an instrumental trio.

It was recorded live over a weekend at the Moonbase Sound Recording Studio in Coventry. The songs were born out of jams in a central Birmingham flat, and draws inspiration from across jazz, electronica and alternative rock.

Self-taught musicians, bonds are: Fabio Thomas (Guitar), Sam Pugh (Piano) and Ben Lyth (Drums). They grew up together and reconvened in the Midlands over their passion for music. They share influences including BadBadNotGood, Surprise Chef, Floating Points, Bonobo and Cinematic Orchestra.

Kind use of place by & support selection will be provided by the Hussain Brothers, and who also play on the 12th July. We are on for 4th July Starting at 6pm…and on til lateish.

In 1970, Mohammed Ayub (‘Mr Ayub’) founded Oriental Star Agencies (OSA) in Balsall Heath. OSA went onto become a leading influence on the Asian music scene, importing, promoting and producing music from the Indian subcontinent as well as nurturing talent among the young Asian diaspora. It remained at its Balsall Heath site until 2017.

The East in West Archive came from OSA. Join us on the 1st March for ARCHIVES LIVE to see the collection presented and archived in person.

‘ARCHIVES LIVE’ is the culmination of decades of work. Started by Oriental Star Agencies in 1970 and currently under the stewardship of Trueform Projects, the 3000-strong archive of South Asian vinyl records is being presented in a variety of mediums for one night at the Bramall music building.

With a sharp focus on the importance of radical archives throughout, the evening will start with a screening of Request Line, a short film that pays homage to this history - playing the records, showing their artwork, sharing the requests, and stories of the long-lasting impact the music and Oriental Star Agencies had on the South Asian diaspora.

We chronicle the archival process undertaken to document each record, emphasizing the artwork and other discovered notes in the sleeves. Presenting the sounds of the archive in an immersive original composition by our resident PhD researcher Marty Fisk, on the 32-channel BEASTdome loudspeaker system.
Bookending the event, we will be introducing two new radical archives from Leftfoot & Mission Print, both organizations celebrating their 25-year anniversaries this year. Based in Birmingham, they form part of the future work Trueform Projects hope to be undertaking very soon.

TRUSTEES CALL OUT //

TrueForm Projects (TFP) is seeking to appoint new Trustees in 2022 who will champion the mission of its archival projects, and enable reflection and interrogation of the ways in which communities live in the world that surround us, both in the past and into the future.

Based in Birmingham and recognised internationally, TFP was set up in 2012 to provide a variety of benefits to communities by collecting oral histories, artefacts and personal stories into a rare and sought after archive: about the community and by the community. These projects specialise in, but are not specific to, the diaspora communities from South Asia in Britain, and explore projects that operate over the expanse of mediums, from photography to film and moving-image.

TFP’s values guide decision-making and how they operate and work with others:

● Socially and environmentally conscious to provide a variety of benefits to communities

● Open and transparent responsibility in line with the decolonising museums discourse

● Inclusive and accessible

The team is excited by new changes occurring and developing in the sector and is looking to bring new Trustees who will champion its values and bring different perspectives, skills and life experiences to the Board.

Will you play a role in driving this initiative to represent and re-present cultural heritage?

Find out more about this amazing opportunity and apply today by visiting our website and sending your CV and Cover Letter to: [email protected]

Application deadline is Friday 3rd June 2022.
