Adventures on a Desert Island, Maciej Sieńczyk

Woken up from a catastrophic dream, a man finds a diary behind his front door and starts to read it. He follows a story of a man who embarked on a cruise to Africa. The ship was sunk by a tsunami but he survived and found himself on a mysterious desert island. The plot is composed of strange stories whose peculiar character is highlighted by the author’s stylised language.

A journey into the unknown provides an opportunity to show the true face of modern man whose life remains unchanged even after a disaster. There is an inherent fallibility to Sieńczyk’s characters, as well as inability and unwillingness to change. Stranded on a desert island, they don’t take any action – they simply recount incredible stories and wait to be carried along by the tides of fate.

Romanian Socialist Modernist : Black Sea Littoral by Horia Brebeneanu

Horia is a regular visitor to Modernist HQ and an interesting conversation is always ensured. Out of one of these conversations we learnt that he had been making Polaroid pictures of sea side resorts back in his native Romania. Along with this he was also collecting vintage slides of the same resorts, sold as souvenirs when the resorts were at the height of their popularity.

Subsequently we organised a Show and Tell event at Modernist HQ were Horia talked about the development of these state built resorts and their demise after the fall of Communism. Such was the richness of the story, the vintage slides and Horia’s own Polaroids we decided to collect them in a photobook.

This evocative volume shows a country many of us will be unfamiliar with and a level of state control many of us could never imagine. There is also an an air of utopia about the vintage slides and concurrently a sense of faded glory with the contemporary Polaroids.

Slavic folklore passes on stories on various colourful creatures, from mighty gods to tiny spirits. They live in forests and occupy households. They have shape shifting abilities. They’re moody and unpredictable.

The “Slavic Mythology” project started in 2020 with an online series under the graceful name ‘Slavtober’. Now, at last, it’s a magical art book combining illustrations, symbols and original writings, which will introduce deities and demons of Slavic mythology.

This book introduces 16 Slavic folklore creatures together with their stories (some of them well known, some of them almost forgotten) and is probably one of few Slavic publications like this in English.

This is the 2nd edition of the book, with refined details and updated text.

The Final Curtain by Darren Holden takes us on a poignant journey to former 'palaces of the people' - showing little of their former glamour and luxury, with most now in a perilous and decrepit state.

From former grand theatres right up to 'modern' multiplexes - it is probably better to grab a hard hat rather than a bag of popcorn as we have a peek behind 'The Final Curtain' of the golden age of cinema.
