Birmingham Opera Company

Birmingham Opera Company International award winning opera company featuring international artists alongside local volunteers

Opera can be the most powerful and communicative of art forms. Birmingham Opera Company is committed to sharing this belief with the broadest possible range of people. By involving ourselves in local communities and making local people the focus of what we do, not only do we offer the opportunity to engage with opera at first hand but also in return have our productions enriched by a wealth of hum

an experience. Our work, preparation and presentation are governed entirely by this commitment. "Ecstasy from Birmingham Opera Company..... incontestably the most artistically significant force in British opera this century." Richard Bratby, The Spectator, August 2021

“Imagine what Gareth Malone does with amateurs with The Choir on TV and multiply that by a hundred” – Brian Appleyard in the Sunday Times Culture Magazine

We support young people in Birmingham unlocking their creative potential!

Voices of the Future is a brand-new youth engagement programme which inspires the next generation of Birmingham's artists to get stuck in and spark their creativity.

Young people aged 16-25 will work in collaboration with professional artists to develop new work, explore opera/music, and get involved in creative projects, all whilst reducing isolation, building confidence and developing skills for life.

"..a sequence of six 15-minute-or-so operas commissioned by
Birmingham Opera Company, whose motto was emblazoned in neon behind the bar: “Not what you expect from opera.” That’s true, although happily this production was what might be expected from a company known for community work (the chorus scenes involved about 50 local singers, actors and dancers), emerging talent and inventive, immersive stagings (here using three cabaret stages)."

Birmingham Opera Company promised to ‘reconnect me with reality’ with six new 15-minute works. It also involved a coconut shy and an ode to a legendary nightclub
