This moving audio installation by Birmingham artist and poet Nafeesa ( ) explores memory, family and belonging, and is a celebration of Birmingham’s working-class communities and the city’s changing identity through the lens of personal experience.

Join us this Saturday 8th August for a free interactive sound workshop 🔉 with artist as part of the Birmingham Media Archive Project closing weekend! 📺

We invite you to bring up to 5 short recordings (max 60 seconds) of everyday sounds such as a boiling kettle, barking dog, passing traffic, or whatever else catches your ear 👂 simply using your phone or whatever sond recording equipment you may have.

The group’s recordings will then be remixed into an audio-visual artwork exploring contemporary approaches to media, archives and collaboration 🤝

You can drop into the workshop at any point (we reccomend on the hour), and there will also be opportunities to record new sounds through the day.

We invite you to join us for the Birmingham Media Archive Project closing weekend!

On 7th August for Digbeth First Friday, resident artist Gary Stewart presents Remanence: a live sonic performance taking place in the BRIG Cafe at the Warehouse from 6-8:30pm.

Throughout the evening, Gary will build an immersive soundscape that excavates the echoes, traces and density of past and present Digbeth, pulling in sounds that surround us using a geophone, contact mics and interior electromagnetic frequencies.

From 2-5pm on Sat 8th August, Gary returns for a free, hands-on sound workshop that invites sharing and exploration of the key ideas that have shaped his artistic practice over the past 40 years. Participants are asked to bring up to five short recordings of environmental sounds captured on their phone (or sound recorders), such as a boiling kettle, barking dog, passing traffic, or other everyday noises. Across both days of our closing weekend, BMAP cohort members Vignesh Venkataramaiah and Erinn Dhesi will share moving image and text works developed in response to films and interview tapes which document the foundations and impact of the 1980’s West Midlands Anti Deportation Campaign.

Drop in to the Vivid Projects space from 2-7pm Fri 7th, and from 2-5pm Sat 8th, where the artist works are screening on a rolling basis.

In light of South Asian Heritage Month in the UK, Vignesh Venkataramaiah has shared more excerpts of his response to materials via the Birmingham Media Archive Project. He focuses on the threads that tie people together in times of crisis.

Vignesh says:

This Friday is your LAST chance to tell the MRHA in-person what you think of their plans. Their last in-person event is at The Rep from 12-18:30.

If you're able, please do go along and let them know why Birmingham Friends of the Earth's The Warehouse and other Digbeth small businesses that are threatened by their plans matter to you.

Let's say it loud and clear - better trains for Brum don't need to cost us community.

If you can't make it along in person on Friday you can still respond online. MRHA's online consultation is open until August 28th. A few people have asked for more detailed guidance on completing it - we're working on that so give us a follow and watch this space. 💣 Don’t let another part of Digbeth fall to the wrecking ball!

🚧 Transport development should not come at the expense of cultural and community wellbeing.

The Warehouse 🍃 - a vital Digbeth community space is under threat. Under the Midlands Rail Hub Alliance (MRHA) Bordesley Chords proposals, The Warehouse is currently earmarked for demolition around 2030.

For those unfamiliar with it, The Warehouse was established in 1975. It is home to Birmingham Friends of the Earth and houses BRIG Café, Voce Books, Sprocket Cycles, Vivid Projects, Brum Radio, extensively used community meeting spaces, and the Digbeth Community Garden. We relocated to this warm, welcoming and supportive community in 2024, and hope to create and share more creative opportunities like Birmingham Media Archive Project and Blackhole Club past 2030 🤞🏽

Every day, The Warehouse is alive with activity and open to all.

Demolishing a climate action hub to make way for an ostensibly greener transport scheme sends a troubling message.

Together with our neighbours, we urge you to help protect the five decades of community and cultural development that have shaped this building, its garden and the people who call it home. The public consultation runs from 6 July to 28 August 2026—please make your voice heard.

Did you know? 📸

Neil Kenlock arrived in Britain from Jamaica at just 13 years old — and went on to become one of the most important visual chroniclers of Black British life.

As a young adult he was a photographer for the West Indian World, edited by the legendary Claudia Jones — who founded Notting Hill Carnival.

In 1979 he co-founded ROOT magazine — the first glossy lifestyle publication aimed at Black British readers.

Then in 1990 he helped launch the legendary radio station Choice FM - the UK's first 24-hour licensed Black music station.

Now, more than 50 years on, his daughter Emelia is making sure those images — and the stories they carry — are never lost.

Information overload! Our brains are still processing a brilliant visit to Tate Stores yesterday as part of the Birmingham Media Archive Project. All the wonders and challenges of preserving and exhibiting time based media. Our generous host and guide was Time Based Media Conservator Chris King whose apt T-shirt featured in the first image.

Photography of art works in the stores is strictly forbidden so here’s a selection of other things that caught our eye.
