This Digbeth First Friday, we’re opening the doors.

Pop down to Bowyer Street tomorrow evening to meet Birmingham artists Natalie Mills and Maya Davis-Stokes for our Meet the Artist drop in for their joint exhibition, A Class of Our Own.

Come soak up the atmosphere, chat with Natalie and Maya about their work, and explore the exhibition.

About ‘A Class of Our Own’

What happens when you refuse to fit into the neat little boxes society carves out for you? You break them and carve out a space entirely of your own. A Class of Our Own is a vibrant, deeply honest exploration of class, identity, and belonging. Bound by shared lived experiences, Natalie and Maya are using their practices to ask what it means to build a creative life in a system that was never designed with working-class artists in mind.

Natalie’s practice brings us into a vivid, instinctual world layering bold imagery and recurring motifs that demand attention. Maya uses the rich, tactile medium of oil paint to distort portraiture, pulling reality apart to tell beautifully fragmented stories. Together, their work creates a raw, vibrant dialogue you genuinely have to feel up close.

Instead of raiding the same old haunts for the same old seasonal decorations as everyone else, why not roll up your sleeves, plunge your hands into some gloriously messy clay, and make something with your hands?

On Sunday 20th September, the absolute legend James T. Smith is taking over the space for an intimate ceramic workshop. If you haven't seen his work yet, James is a phenomenal local artist whose pieces draw on Japanese design, blending sharp, minimal lines with raw, tactile clay.

So, whether you’re a complete beginner or just itching to get your hands dirty, you’ll walk away with TWO entirely-your-own masterpieces to flaunt by Halloween, one sculpted from raw clay, and one pre-made piece custom painted and underglazed!

Fine art printing is officially coming directly into the space at Seventh Circle, Digbeth. From high-resolution art scanning and raw files alongside gallery-standard framing, we now handle the entire process under one roof.

We are talking full-spectrum fine art printing, including Giclée, photographic prints, and limited edition runs, using heavy-duty archival pigment inks, rich heavyweight cotton rag papers, and precise colour matching that actually does your work justice. All crafted with the exact same obsession over detail as the bespoke framing you already trust us with.

Improving an area should never mean erasing the soul. grit and cultural backbone that made people fall in love with it in the first place.

The actual list of independent venues, creative spaces, and local staples threatened by potential closure and redevelopment is so MUCH MUCH longer than this list. Digbeth's identity was built by artists musicians, venues, and independent businesses, not sanitised corporate plans.

"You see someone without a smile, give 'em yours." 🩷

Dolly Parton wasn't just a country icon; she was a force of pure good and me and Chez are both big fans of her and her work.

A philanthropist by choice, an activist by heart and someone who chose to enrich the world around her.

Laura Tinald captured that spark so beautifully in this portrait a couple of years back. Having this original piece in the gallery feels like holding a little piece of that light. We wanted to share Laura's work today in tribute to a woman who left the world immeasurably better than she found it. ✨

Everyone. We need to talk.

​It’s always a fine balance as an independent business when deciding whether to speak up about these kinds of things. You don't want to bring negative energy into the room, but staying completely silent while an external mess actively crushes our footfall isn't an option. It's time for the unfiltered truth.

For six months, we’ve dealt with a Greek chorus of vans and lorries blocking our entrance. Concrete trickled down and set inside a Victorian pipe right outside, turning a 5-week job into a SIX-MONTH nightmare.

From the street corner you literally cannot see us. It looks like a dead end. We're basically Narnia! Imagine running a space where a physical blockade swallows your facade. Visibility has hit an all-time low, footfall has nosedived, and for an independent space, this is serious.

We’ve tried waiting it out, but staying silent doesn't make a change.

What happens when you flat out refuse to shrink yourself into the little boxes society builds for you? You smash them to absolute pieces and you build something entirely your own!

A Class of Their Own is a fierce, unapologetic, and emotionally charged exhibition calling out class, identity, and the radical act of thriving in spaces that were never designed for us in the first place.

Artists Natalie Mills and Maya Davis-Stokes have come together through shared lived experience, mutual admiration, and a total refusal to be contained by broken, elitist structures. Their work is a massive, beautiful call-out for anyone who has ever been made to feel like an outsider, anyone building belonging from scratch, and anyone surviving by creating absolute beauty in the cracks.

Meet the Artists

Maya Davis-Stokes: Maya specialises in intentionally, brilliantly unravelling portraiture with oil paint to expose the absurdity of the stories we are fed about ourselves. Blending figurative and abstract elements, her distorted faces dig into identity, neurodivergence, health, and how quickly "reality" shifts depending on who holds the power.

Natalie Mills: Natalies work is gloriously chaotic riot of colour, texture, and pure instinct. She layers paint, spray, collage, and ink until it becomes a living, breathing middle finger to rigid expectations. Heavily influenced by street art and graffiti culture, her raw marks speak directly to survival, transformation, and taking up space.


Both artists agree: "We create our own space removed from class structures, flourishing in between."

Last night was a scorcher in every sense. We opened No Boundaries with EXP Collective and somehow managed to have a beautiful, buzzing launch night while collectively melting into the floor. If you were here, thank you for braving the 37‑degree sauna that was Seventh Circle for one gorgeous evening in Digbeth.

The exhibition is full of experimentation, curiosity and creative freedom. EXP Collective have brought together Birmingham artists who aren’t afraid to push past their boundaries and let their work unfold in unexpected ways. It’s bold, it’s joyful and it’s exactly the kind of energy we love in the gallery. If you’re looking for local art, emerging artists, contemporary painting or something new to explore in Birmingham’s art scene, this one’s for you.

If you missed the launch, don’t worry. The exhibition is open all week and runs until 21 August. Pop down to Seventh Circle Gallery in Digbeth, support local artists and spend some time with the work. We’d love to see you.
