One of Wirral’s hidden gems, Williamson Art Gallery & Museum is minutes from the heart of Birkenhead. Our wide-ranging permanent collections include painting, sculpture, furniture, prints and decorative arts. We are proud to be home to the largest public collection of Della Robbia pottery in the UK - Birkenhead’s contribution to the Arts & Crafts movement. Meanwhile, our ship models celebrate the

region’s maritime history. We also host a range of temporary exhibitions and events – please see our website for the latest information. The Williamson Café offers a range of snacks and hot and cold drinks. The Shop stocks work by local craftspeople, while the independent Oxton Books is a long-standing resident of our foyer. An accessible toilet is available.

This weeks theme is ‘Life by the sea’ for John Bellany: Anchored at Scottish Fisheries Museum

This piece is called 'Murmurings From The Sea' by Robert Fowler (1853-1926)

Born in 1853 in Cellardyke, Fife he was brought up mainly by his uncle and aunt while his parents were away on business. He showed a very early aptitude for art, starting first with pencil drawings then moving on to painting and clay modelling. After his family move to Liverpool he studied at Liverpool Collage followed by the Heatherley School of Fine Art and the South Kensington Schools.

Due to health problems it became necessary for a long period of "convalescence" in Yorkshire and Llandudno in Wales where he painted land scapes such as "View of Conwy Bay," "Old Roman Bridge Near Swansea," and "Mist on Cader Idris."

Eventually moving back to Liverpool he took an art studio in Castle Street, which became his base for several decades.

Liverpool Life Drawing will be returning for their next Friday night session at the Williamson.

📅Friday 11th September ⌚18:30 - 20:30pm

Open to all abilities, no experience needed as the tutors can guide you through the session. Basic materials will be available, though you are also welcome to bring your own or let the tutors know if there’s anything specific you require.

🏧£10 cash or card payment on the night. No booking required.
