What a fabulous evening we had at our last night! The Duchess of Richmond herself would have been thrilled I’m sure! Here is the video overview of the evening, showcasing the joyous time we shared.

Thank you to everyone who came! And a massive thank you to Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer for the absolutely wonderful music 😄 also, big thanks to the Bonnets and Breeches committee for organising the event and to Newark Town Hall for allowing us to use their glorious ballroom for its 250th Anniversary!

Individual full dance videos, where available, will be posted on our Youtube channel, so do have a look! https://youtube.com/.breeches?si=Z8-E6B3iGrISqH5z

Second video for today… here is a fun little one for you all. Remember back to our video last year with the one and only Mr Collins…? 😂

Today, we took part in the first of 5 days we are performing at Belton House as part of their Literary Festival… but where is everyone?

In the video you can see them performing one of our favourite Victorian-era dances called “Les Rats Quadrille Fig 1: Le Pantalon”, composed by Gervasius Redler and published in 1843 for the student dancers (known as les petit rats) of the Paris Opera Ballet.

Rats feature in many books, such as in Oliver Twist, where Charles Dickens uses rats to symbolize the poverty of Victorian slums.

Beatrix Potter wrote about a rat called Samuel Whiskers, who lives in a secret hideout under the attic floor of Tom Kitten’s home.

In the Pied Piper of Hamelin poem by Robert Browning, Browning describes the town of Hamelin being overrun by a plague of rats, who even nest in men’s Sunday hats.

They say you are never more than a couple of meters away from a rat… especially if you have a library filled with them!

The music for this dance is by Spare Parts.

Background music is “The Author” by Meryl and Ian Thomson.
