Our next film, on Thursday 18 June, is a quintessential gothic horror-romance starring Jessie Buckley.
The Bride! (15) is a new take on the tragic monster story set primarily in 1930s Chicago. Frankenstein's creation (played by Christian Bale) resurrects a murdered woman (Jessie Buckley) and makes her his bride. But she is in no mood to be his possession in a film that explores themes of body autonomy and feminist rebellion.
It's a wildly ambitious, visually stunning, chaotic genre-mashup that balances tragedy with anarchic comedy.

Our next film (11 June) is 'Nuremberg' (15)
The film is a serious account of the trials of high-ranking N**i leaders that manages to be both a courtroom drama and a psychological thriller. Russell Crowe, playing Hermann Göring, is charismatic, and chilling. The film's post-WW2 themes are as relevant today as they were then.
The Time Out critic said: “Russell Crowe is a showstopper in this gripping, smartly executed, psychologically acute and entertaining historical drama. Everyone here is a real-life figure and there is an authenticity and intellectual rigour to this extraordinary, century-defining event.”

Next Thursday's film (June 04) is Wuthering Heights (15).
This is the steamy, modern adaptation of Emily Brontë's gothic novel that focuses on the intense, destructive, and forbidden love between Cathy and the orphan Heathcliff. Driven by obsessive passion Heathcliff returns to seek vengeance for past injustice.
The UK Film Review critic said, “The film is gorgeous. Margot Robbie is truly excellent as Cathy, in turns cruel, selfish and vulnerable, and Jacob Elordi smoulders as Heathcliff. The result is dazzling. The costumes, set design, framing, photography all deliver a lush spectacle.”

Next Thursday's film (28 May) 19:30 is Song Sung Blue (12).
It's a bio-drama based on the true story of a Milwaukee couple who found love and local fame as a Neil Diamond tribute act. We follow their musical journey, marriage and personal tragedies as they overcome despair to stage a resilient comeback.
The Independent's critics said: “This real-life saga is unashamedly in thrall to nostalgia. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson are a dream combo in a story that isn’t afraid to take us to dark and difficult places. A real crowd-pleaser, just like the Jewish Elvis himself.”

Next Thursday's film (21 May) is H is for Hawk (15). It's based on the bestselling memoir of the same name. Claire Foy's performance in the lead role is brilliant. She plays Helen who turns to falconry following the death of her father (played by Brendan Gleeson). Training her goshawk is physically and emotionally draining but Helen's journey teaches her how to navigate her profound loss.
The Roger Ebert critic said: “The film’s strengths lie squarely with Claire Foy who is heartbreaking: steely and stoic in the stiff-upper-lip tradition yet thoroughly conscious of her sorrow, which smarts beneath all the poised expressions like the inner wound it is.”

Our film next Thursday (14 May) is the one about how Liverpool comedian John Bishop broke into stand-up comedy. In 'Is This Thing On?' (15), a divorce-comedy that has transposed the story to America, a couple's marriage (Will Arnett and Laura Dern) is quietly unravelling. He takes to the comedy stage and turns his mental turmoil into a richly rewarding new career.
The BFI Film Review critic said: “Will Arnett delivers just the right amount of self-deprecation; he is genuinely relatable. There’s a feral bitterness behind his eyes redolent of the accumulated fatigue of male midlife – he’s an adult, in a movie made for adults.”

Our next film (7th May) is Hamnet (12) and it promises to be a sell-out so PLEASE BOOK EARLY.
Based on the bestselling book, this drama explores the profound grief of William Shakespeare and his wife (Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley) following the death of their son. It was nominated for five Oscars, and Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her performance.
The Empire Magazine critic wrote, “When the tragedy comes it is devastating – with all the wrenching, suffocating, physical manifestations of grief; Buckley, in particular, could well shatter your soul. Those tears you will likely find on your face are of catharsis, of cinematic healing.”

Next Thursday's film (30th April) is a 'Critics Choice' screening. This means it has been given rave reviews across the world. It's an Indian film (with subtitles) called All We Imagine As Light (15).
Among other awards it won the Foreign Language BAFTA and Cannes Grand Prix. It's the story of three women: a jaded nurse abandoned by her husband; her bold and fiery roommate; and a widow facing eviction. Should they conform with or rebel against the country's norms?
The Guardian's critic gave it the top 5* rating saying: "This dreamlike and gentle Mumbai tale is a triumph – a glorious film.
The iPaper's critic also gave it 5* saying: "The film's beautiful loneliness will speak to your soul. It's intense and deeply felt and glows with an all-too-familiar ache. It's beautiful."
Booking is online here: https://boxoffice.stgeorgeshall.org.uk/ or at the St George's Hall café. Alternatively call the Hall's office on 01299 400110.

Thursday's film (23 April) is The Choral, a gentle yet poignant British film written by Alan Bennett. Set during the First World War it contrasts the joy of music with the grim reality of what's happening in France. Ralph Fiennes plays a new choirmaster struggling to keep the town's choral together when all the fit young men are destined for the front. It features a cast of fine British actors who you'll recognise.
The Guardian's critic loved it saying, “Alan Bennett’s new film is a quiet and consistent pleasure: an unsentimental but deeply felt drama with a heartbeat of wit, poignancy and common sense. This genteel first world war story of repressed passion is delivered with surprising candour.”

ATTENTION ALL DOG-LOVERS!
Next Thursday's film (16 April) stars a 150lb Great Dane named Bing whose performance is described as authentic, soulful, and the heart of the movie. Apollo who plays Bing, won three awards for Best Animal in a Film.
A New York novelist (Naomi Watts) has her life thrown into disarray after her closest friend (Bill Murray) bequeaths her his Great Dane. Mayhem ensues before she and the dog learn to live together.
The i Paper's critic was big fan saying, “If you love dogs, you’ll need three hankies for this melancholy comedy. It’s a heart-wrenching meditation on grief. Gentle and subtle, it avoids rank sentimentality to explore its subject in a fresh and sometimes heart-wrenching way.”
