It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Strider, one of our beloved giraffe, at the age of 23. ๐
Born here at West Midlands Safari Park in 2002, Strider was more than just the oldest giraffe - he was a true icon of the Park and a much-loved member of the giraffe family.
Known for his gentle nature, laid-back personality, d***y expressions and unmistakable slobbery smile, Strider had a way of winning over everyone he met. Whether you knew him as the towering giraffe on the Safari Drive or had the privilege of working alongside him, he left a lasting impression on countless guests, keepers and colleagues over the years.
As a calm and reassuring presence within the herd, Strider played a special role in the lives of many calves born at the Park. He was a wonderful uncle, often offering companionship and comfort to younger giraffes as they grew, and helping to shape the close-knit herd we know today.
When his quality of life began to decline recently, the difficult decision was made to say goodbye, with his welfare remaining our highest priority throughout.
Strider's loss is deeply felt by everyone who cared for him. The audio accompanying this video features words from members of our Ungulate team, many of whom worked alongside him for years and knew him best.
Thank you, Strider, for 23 wonderful years, for the memories you've given us, and for the joy you've brought to so many. You will never be forgotten.
If you have a favourite memory or photo of Strider, we would love for you to share it in the comments as we celebrate his remarkable life together. ๐
