Some sketches of the floor of the Siena Cathedral done last year. ✨

The floor of the Duomo di Siena is a marble masterpiece, normally covered for protection but unveiled to the public once a year - I was lucky enough to be Siena at the right time.

The artists used marble inlays and graffito (cutting lines into the marble, then filling them with black stucco) - the end results are like intricate drawings on marble.

In our class today with Eugenie Vronskaya we painted using 'colour fields'. A technique in which you have to build the picture up only using small abstract forms of colour. Building them up until you hope the objects magically appear...

Soo hard to not be tempted to draw in boundary lines, which I did far too early - our brains are so obsessed with distinguishing between objects and space as quick as possible.

We had a look into Odin Redilon, who too experimented with undefined fields of colour and dissolving objects.

Happy to share I have a selection of works now showing at . ✨

Here are some of the landscapes nicely hung and there is a selection of still life too. It was my first time visiting the picturesque market town in North Yorkshire. A visit to and their gorgeous cafe is a must too! 🪻🌷

Relearning the power of thumbnails and 'found shapes' in observational drawing. ✍️

Found shapes are the basic, underlying geometric (circles, squares, triangles) or organic (blobs, curves) shapes you 'find' when deconstructing a complex subject. You can also 'find' shapes by tracing the empty air or background pockets between objects, such as negative space.

It simplifies complex forms and helps bypass your brain's preconceptions (e.g. drawing the actual shapes of light/dark rather than drawing the mental idea of something. I find it hard to do...

I was delighted to be invited to give an illustrated talk to the Willerby Art Group recently. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on my own work, share my creative processes and influences and offer a deeper insight into the ideas behind my paintings.

It was especially rewarding to engage people with stories, decisions and inspirations that shape my practise and to have thoughtful discussions about art and creativity.

A real highlight was to meet so many other local artists! Thank you to everyone that came for a really enjoyable talk. 🎨✨
