Funding for Youth-Led Projects to Celebrate Local History (England)

Historic England is making funding available to help young people living in deprived areas of England to explore and celebrate untold local histories.

The History in the Making programme will enable underrepresented young people (aged 13 to 25) to research, discover and commemorate local histories. Each funded project will create a place marker to celebrate and share these stories with the community.

Place markers could be:

- an installation or artwork in, and of, itself, e.g. a mural, a sculpture, a community bench, or
- an engaging panel or plaque that triggers other content via links or QR codes, e.g. audio tours, videos or other creative responses

The programme expects to fund around 25 youth-led projects of between £10,000 and £15,000.

Applications will be accepted from organisations of all types, including charities, community interest groups, and local authorities. Individuals can apply if they are registered as sole traders.

The closing date for applications is 24 July 2026.

Announcing the first queen! Eva Simpson from malt manufacturer, Simpsons Malt Limited, wears a crown by basket maker, Anna Corbett.

Grain has been a staple of Berwick industry for centuries - the name Berwick literally means ‘barley farm’ or settlement - and Simpson’s Malt has been providing employment in the town since its founding in 1862.

Eva's royal portrait is part of the exhibition, on show from 11 July at Holy Trinity Church. Get your free ticket here: https://createberwick.co.uk/our-wic/

Congratulations to Berwick-artist Samantha Carey for being selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The exhibition is open until 23rd August.

Text by Greg rook of Blackbird Rook Art Advisory

Samantha Cary’s Bad Actors returns to two of her recurring characters – the cowboy and the concubine – this time caught in a darker register. The setting is a bar, lined with bottles that gleam like trophies, or temptations. Between them, the familiar choreography plays out: his stance is wary but rehearsed, hers both defiant and exposed. It’s a scene steeped in uneasy theatre – the flirtation of performance and control.

The title Bad Actors plays on both meaning and mood. These figures are not villains, just players past their peak – still on stage, still performing, but slightly out of sync with the parts they once knew. Cary’s use of traditional intaglio techniques – hardground, aquatint, sugar lift and spit bite – lends the print a tactile, worn quality, mirroring the erosion of glamour within the scene.

It’s a small but resonant work: cinematic, melancholy, and quietly devastating in its recognition that all roles eventually slip.
