Berwick Barracks Artist Studio Bursaries

'As part of our development of the studios, Maltings are now offering three bursaries for artists based in North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.

Through the provision of a studio for one month, these bursaries offer an opportunity for artists at any point in their career to benefit from a dedicated working space to support the development of their creative practice.

Additionally, we are offering a bursary in partnership with Berwick Open Studios for an artist who may not be able to participate in the event (due to not having a studio or exhibition display space) the opportunity to do so.

Berwick Open Studios 2026 is funded by Create Berwick, The North East Mayoral Strategic Authority and Northumberland County Council.

There are also some studio bursaries for artists to use the visiting artist studio towards the end of the year and during Berwick Open Studios.

These bursaries offer an opportunity for artists at any point in their career to benefit from a dedicated working space to support the development of their creative practice.'

The Living Barracks is an ambitious multi-partner project, that will deliver a thriving cultural hub and visitor destination at Berwick Barracks in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

'It turned out that artists on the pilot made back millions. The state’s own research found that for every euro the government spent on supporting artists, society received €1.39 in return, and the scheme was estimated to have generated more than €100m in social and economic benefits.'

A pilot scheme offering some artists €300-plus a month for three years is being made permanent. But should something so fundamental be run like a lottery, asks writer Caelainn Hogan
