Great rehearsal yesterday and plenty of cake in preparation for our summer tour to The Netherlands in August and concert at St Peter’s church, Berkhamsted on 12th September. Lots of choral favourites to look forward to including Handel’s coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest. Composed in 1727 for the coronation of George II, it has been sung at the coronation of every British monarch since then. Glorious !! 👑🇬🇧🎶🎵🥰

With only 3 weeks to go until our concert Ein Deutsches Requiem Brahms, we’re thrilled to welcome members of the English Philharmonia Orchestra back to Berkhamsted. This exceptional ensemble is made up of musicians who perform with London’s leading orchestras, with many having held principal positions in groups such as the English National Ballet, London Philharmonic, BBC Concert Orchestra, and London Symphony Orchestra.

They are world‑class players who bring extraordinary skill, passion, and joy to every performance and we are incredibly lucky to have some of them join us for what promises to be a stunning performance of the Brahms Requiem.

As we look ahead to our Spring concert on the 25th April, we would like to share with you some of the beautiful movements we have been learning.

As the heart of the requiem, movement IV. Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen provides comfort to the living, highlighting a sense of spiritual rest rather than the terror of judgement. Characterized by a gentle, soothing, and hymn-like quality, shifting away from the intensity of the previous movements, the choir expresses joy and longing through smooth, intertwining melodies, culminating in a celebration of those who praise God.

Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem can be heard as deeply connected to the stormy, transformative nature of spring. While rooted in themes of grief and human suffering, the work continually moves toward consolation and renewal, mirroring the seasonal shift from darkness to regrowth. Turbulent orchestral textures and weighty choral writing evoke the unsettled, dramatic forces of early spring, while moments of luminous calm and warmth suggest new life emerging after hardship. In this way, the Requiem reflects not only mourning, but also the natural cycle of renewal, where struggle gives way to hope and rebirth.

We're on the countdown to our fantastic spring event on the 25th April, Ein Deutsches Requiem Brahms, and once again we're able to welcome some amazing performers to join us.

Dyfed Wyn Evans is a Welsh baritone opera singer. Dyfed was born in Cardiff and spent his childhood tearing between carol concerts, choir rehearsals and eisteddfodau. He moved to Manchester to study singing and opera at the RNCM where he won numerous scholarships and prizes including a Peter Moores Foundation Scholarship to enable him to study opera at the Vienna Conservatoire.

After graduating, he continued his European Odyssey for a decade, moving between countries and working for many of the European Opera Houses and festivals.

We're on the countdown to our fantastic spring event on the 25th April, Ein Deutsches Requiem Brahms, and once again we're able to welcome some amazing performers to join us.

We're pleased to welcome back Welsh soprano Elen Lloyd Roberts! Elen studied for a degree in Music at Durham University before going on to complete an MA in Vocal Performance at the Royal Academy of Music under the tutelage of Mary Nelson and Christopher Glynn.

Her operatic roles include Susanna Le nozze di Figaro (Longhope Opera, Berlin Opera Academy), Despina Così fan tutte (Instant Opera, Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra), Zerlina Don Giovanni (OPRA Cymru), Marzelline Fidelio (OPRA Cymru), Gretel Hänsel und Gretel (Royal Academy of Music Opera Scenes), Drusilla L’incoronazione di Poppea (Hampstead Garden Opera), and La Chauve-Souris L’enfant et les sortilèges (Samling Academy Opera). In 2022, she premiered the role of The Fool in Mared Emlyn’s new Welsh opera for children, Cyfrinach y Brenin (The King’s Secret), with OPRA Cymru.
