Ali Clark - maker

Ali Clark - maker Maker of things made from wood and plants. I make items from reclaimed fabric, handspin wool, hand dye using natural plant based dyes.

As a gardener and lover of person-powered tools and natural materials my work ranges from green woodworking to spinning and dyeing natural textiles. I am always looking for the lowest environmental impact processes. I am drawn for inspiration to lyrics, historical artefacts, capturing memories and above all, colour. I am also a qualified gardener with a Horticulture Diploma and a Permaculture Des

ign Certificate, and love to design and maintain gardens for the benefit of people and wildlife. I help to run The Friendship Orchard project, planting fruit and nut trees around the DE56 area for people to share food in the future. I run workshops in hand spinning, natural dyeing, and growing dye plants. Contact me to arrange a lesson/workshop or commission.

On the lead up to running 'Green woodworking for women' course (starts 22nd Sept) I'm building shaving horses for each participant, and using green wood I can cut from my garden.
This weekend I cut some straight hazel to make fulcrum pins for the moving part of the shaving horses. Hazel is very easy to work when green. I also cut some probably 20 yr old Hawthorn about a month ago and put it under a tarpaulin to keep it green. It's harder to work because the grain is twisted, but a very nice wood with a pinkish colour when it oxidises, and fine grain.
The shaving horse we'll make on the course will be from seasoned sawn wood and fresh ash wood from the community hub. Ash usually has a nice straight grain making it easier to work. We'll be making 'slab and stick' stools from the green Ash as well, with seats made from either local Sycamore from Al Farson, or Ash from Albion Timber. They should come up lovely.

Excited to be finishing my pole lathe! I learned a lot from Westonbirt Woodworks chair making course and had the chance to use lots of different styles of shaving horses, draw knives, adzes, travishers and loads of other traditional hand wood working tools. This helped me make design decisions for my own shaving horse and pole lathe. Alex Skawinski, Harry Morris and Paul Hayden were all lovely tutors at Westonbirt, good fun and extremely knowledgable. A big thank you to them!
