Our Story
Red Earth Theatre creates new work and adapts classics for children and families, our adaptations honour the original story whilst bringing modern touches, characters with depth and introducing the odd unexpected twist to each re-telling.
Founded in 1999, we make inclusive theatre for children and families. Based in the East Midlands and thinking nationally, our vision is to make theatre that opens doors to new understandings shared across communities, cultures and generations. Red Earth Theatre has been an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation since 2012 with a remit to tour inclusive theatre across the UK.
Red Earth Theatre are pioneers of integrated theatre (making sign language and captioning part of the action on stage), leading the development of new techniques for accessible storytelling that has advanced inclusive practice. They create productions in two languages - Sign Language - British Sign Language (BSL) and Sign Supported English (SSE) and English; use creative captioning and audio description and work with integrated casts of Deaf, disabled and hearing performers to enhance access to their work. When audiences see Red Earth Theatre’s work, they are invited into a creative world where the ideas and experiences of different communities, using different languages, have come together to create a new artistic experience for all.
